The village of Vik is the southernmost village in Iceland which is located on the main ring road around the island around 180km by road Southeast of Reykjavik. Its full name is Vik I Myrdal which means 鈥渢he bay of the valley of the swamp鈥� The peaceful seafront village sits along a dramatic stretch of coastline quaintly, poised between glacier-topped mountains, rugged sea cliffs, and black sand beaches.

The beach at Vik was counted by the US journal Islands Magazine in 1991, as top ten most beautiful beaches on Earth. It is one of the wettest places in Iceland. The cliffs west of the beach are home to many Seabirds and Puffins which are said to burrow into the shallow soils during the nestling season. The latest number of inhabitants in 2016 counting is 318.

1. Vik Village, is a Good Place to Meet Puffins.

The month of May all through to August is the best month to see the puffins since it鈥檚 when they arrive back on land from their Ocean adventures. When you visit during the rainy season you will be lucky to see them during the day.

Reynisfjara beach is located near Vik and it should be one of the destinations if you are planning to see the Puffins. Also, the cliff of Dyrholaey, which is not far from Vik is famous for its Puffins. They like to nest on the Cliffs during summer.

Vik village has a low number of inhabitants with an estimated size of approximately 500 in 2022. This is a slight growth from 318 in 2016.

Vik is located along the Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach and the Reynisdrangar Sea stacks. Both are easily accessible and are within hiking distance. However, something to note down is that Black Sand Beach is not a regular beach and the waves get very dangerous.

In 2011, a small eruption happened but didn鈥檛 break through the glacier ice. It is reported that the volcano hasn鈥檛 officially erupted for over 100 years.

The Volcanologists have collaborated with the Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management and have come up with an evacuation plan just in case of any seismic events.

Vik is a popular rest stop for tourists travelling in South Iceland. This is because it is located midway between Iceland鈥檚 capital, Reykjavik, and the impressive Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon.

Vik and Reykjavik are some of the countries with the most famous attractions such as the waterfalls Skogafoss and Selijalandsfoss. Between Vik and Jokularion there are great hidden gems such as the Hjorleifshofoi cape and Fjaorargljufur canyon.

8. Vik Church and its Purpose

The presence of the Katla volcano in Vik is said to have a danger someday and the church on top of the hill is said could be a rescue just in case an eruption occurred. Katla has not erupted since 1918, however, after the eruption of Eyjafjallajokull, Volcanologists have kept an eye on any Seismic movement in Katla.

An eruption of Katla could melt enough to trigger an enormous flash flood which is believed that it could overflow the entire town. The church is believed to be the only building that would survive such a flood.

Vik is privileged like other Iceland to own a public swimming pool called Sundlaugin. It is almost a religion in Iceland.

One beautiful fact about this swimming pool is that it’s naturally heated by a nearby hot spring and so you do not have to worry about the cold.

There are several trips and tours you can take from Vik such as visiting the Katla Ice Caves. In Vik, tourists usually meet a guide who always takes them in a super jeep to Myrdalsjokull Glacier. Myrdalsjokull is Iceland鈥檚 fourth largest glacier which covers the active Katla Volcano. At the root of the glacier, participants get crampons, helmets, and other glacier gear needed to explore the caves.

You can also take a Zip Line Tour where you will hike between a few zip lines while you still enjoy and learn about Iceland鈥檚 unique landscapes. You can also go Horse Riding on a Black Sand Beach. The Icelandic horse is a special breed that is unique to this country.
