Chan, who was born in Hong Kong in 1985, has been in the spotlight as a pop sensation since winning a singing competition in 2003, which landed him a seat in the Cantopop boy band Sun Boyz. He has just begun performing in mainland films and television series. Following the dissolution of his band, William embarked on a solo career.

Since 2013, he has increasingly turned his career focus to the Chinese mainland. He has appeared in the television series Swords of Legends (2014), The Mystic Nine (2016), Lost Love in Times (2017), Age of Legends (2018), and Loveland: Pearl Eclipse (2021).

1. He participated in the New Talent Singing Awards 

The TVB8 International Chinese New Talent Singing Championship (Traditional Chinese: TVB8) is an annual singing competition organized by TVB that seeks out new singers to enter the Asian music industry. However, William took part in the New Talent Singing Awards and won several awards. Emperor Entertainment Group then signed him. In 2006, he joined the Cantopop group Sun Boyz but left the group in 2008 to pursue a solo career, releasing his debut solo album the same year. He has since released seven albums and six singles.

2. He won the Most Popular Male Newcomer award

Following the dissolution of his band, William embarked on a solo career. In September 2008, William launched his first solo album Will Power, and he was named Most Popular Male Newcomer at the 2008 Hong Kong Jade Solid Gold Best Ten Music Awards Presentation, as well as Most Promising at the RTHK Top 10 Gold Songs Awards. Warrior, William’s second solo album, was released the following year.  He also appeared on Dragon TV’s dancing show Let’s Shake It. 

3. He made his big screen debut in the crime thriller Overheard

In the 2017 Spring Festival Gala, Hong Kong artist William Chan debuted on the Spring Festival Gala stage for the first time, alongside mainland actor Lu Han, performing the legendary old song “Love You Ten Thousand Years” to the audience. William Chan was invited to participate in CCTV twice in 2015 and 2016.

William Chan, who played a major role in popular TV shows such as “Gu Jian Qi Tan” and “Old Nine Gates,” has risen to fame like a rocket. Today, William Chan has over 20 million Weibo followers, and the 2016 Beijing concert established a record of 30 seconds of tickets being robbed.

4. He had a breakthrough in mainland China

William began to shift his work focus to Mainland China in 2013. He directed his debut Chinese drama, The Four, based on Woon Swee Oan’s novel Si Da Ming Bu.  Hunan TV aired the drama in 2015.

He then appeared in the fantasy action drama Swords of Legends. It was a big success in China, topping viewership figures and online views.  The success of Swords of Legends catapulted William to celebrity in China, where he was named Most Popular All-Around Artist and Media’s Most Anticipated Actor at the 6th China TV Drama Awards.

5. He gained a surge in popularity for his role as Fo Ye

William appeared in the tomb-raiding drama The Mystic Nine in 2016, which serves as a precursor to Nanpai Sanshu’s acclaimed web drama The Lost Tomb. The Mystic Nine was a triumph, ranked #1 in television ratings and setting a record for the most online views in a single day, with over 10 billion views. William’s fame skyrocketed as a result of his portrayal as Fo Ye, and he was chosen “Person of the Year” at the iQiyi All-Star Carnival. The same year, he co-starred in the romantic comedy film I Love That Crazy Little Thing with Jessica Jung and appeared in Guo Jingming’s fantasy blockbuster L.O.R.D: Legend of Ravaging Dynasties. 

6. He  was appointed as the first Chinese ambassador of the NFL China

Chan, as the NFL’s new ambassador, was to assist promote the league’s expansion in China and will be a special guest at the 51st Super Bowl in Houston in February.
