10 Chilling Facts about the Hello Kitty Murder
The Hello Kitty Murder case which is famously known as the Hello Kitty hidden body case took place in Hong Kong. In the spring of 1999, a nightclub hostess was abducted along Citrus Road, Lai Yiu Estate. She was tortured in an apartment in Tsim Sha Tsui after she had stolen a wallet that belonged to one of her frequent customers.
The nightclub hostess, Fan Man-yee was abducted and taken captive by three men and another girl and was killed between April 14th to April 15th 1999. The body of Fan Man-yee was decapitated and her skull was put inside a Hello Kitty plush. This is where the murder case got its name from, Hello Kitty Murder.
After Lau led police to the scene on May 24, only her skull, one tooth, and some internal organs were recovered in a plastic bag. Chan was arrested while living in an apartment on Block 72 Mau Wai Road in the Shek Ning section of Shek Lei Estate with his wife Ah Pui (real name Tse Pui-ling) and their newborn baby. Leung Wai-lun fled to mainland China after the murder before being apprehended by police on February 14, 2000. The three suspects were sentenced to life with parole.

1. The Victim was Abandoned and Raised in an Orphanage
Fan Man-yee was born in 1975. She was later abandoned by her family as a child which resulted in her being raised in an all-girls orphanage. At the age of 15, Fan was expelled from the orphanage because of the age restriction rule they had at the facility.
She went ahead and became homeless and addicted to various drugs. The circumstances of her life also led to her into street prostitution at the age of 21. Fan began working at a brothel to make ends meet. She eventually got married to one of her frequent clients and a fellow drug addict identified as Ng Chi-yuen in 1996.
2. Fan Man-yee was Abused in Married and had a Child One Year before the Murder
The victim of the Hello Kitty Murder got married to Ng Chi-yuen in 1996. Two years later in November 1998, she gave birth to their son. This was not long before she was brutally murdered.
The marriage of Fan Man-yee and Ng Chi-yuen was not peaceful as their neighbours described her husband as abusive. The neighbours reported that they could be woken up by the sounds of the couple’s fights and the child’s screaming and crying.
After getting pregnant and giving birth to her son, Fan decided to change her life. She decided to turn her life around to protect her son and provide him with a safer and more peaceful life.
3. Fan Decided to Quit Drugs and got the Hostess Job that got her Murdered
The birth of her son and the abusive marriage made Fan Man-yee decide to change her life for the future of her son. Fan Man-yee quit drugs and prostitution.
She got a job as a hostess at a brothel and left her violent husband before her gruesome murder. Fan lived a much lower income life as she struggled to support her family and herself due to the sacrifices she made in life.

4. The Victim Stole her Regular Client’s Wallet and Money in it
Fan’s regular client at the brothel was Chan Man-lok, a 34-year-old Fook Siu Mei triad member who had previously been charged with stealing and rape. Fan stole Chan’s wallet, which contained approximately $HK4,000 (approximately $500) in early 1999.
When Chan realized what had happened, he demanded that Fan return the money plus a $HK10,000 fee. Fan returned the stolen money right away, but she needed more time to secure the additional fee.
5. Fan was Abducted and Held Hostage for One Month for Failing to Pay the Additional Fee
After failing to repay the additional fee to Chan, trouble was in store for Fan. On 17th March 1999, Fan was abducted at her HDB flat in Block 90 Citrus Road, Fu Yiu section of Lai Yiu Estate by three men and one girl: Chan; his grooming victim Lau Ming-Fong, Leung Wai-lun, and Leung Shing-cho.
The group took Fan to No. 31 Granville Road in Tsim Sha Tsui and imprisoned her for a month. Initially, Chan intended to profit from Fan by selling her to other men.
6. She was Tortured in various Ways and Raped during her Imprisonment
Fan Man-yee was imprisoned by her abductors for one full month. During this period, Fan was tortured and raped on multiple occasions. A source revealed that she was beaten using metal bars, other times strung up and used as a punching bag.
It was reported that there was an occasion when she was kicked around fifty times in the head. To put her through more pain, spices were rubbed into her wounds, and her legs as well as her feet were burning using hot plastic and candle wax.
Fan was even forced to consume human faeces and urine. During these moments, she was made to smile and tell that she enjoyed the beating, refusing to subject her to harsher torture. These events led to her traumatic shock and death.
7. The Body of Fan was Dismembered and Boiled after she Died
Fan died as a result of her injuries on April 14 or April 15, 1999. According to some sources, she died while her captors were away, while others claim she died overnight. When her captors returned Fan’s body, they dismembered and boiled the remains; her skull was sewed inside a Hello Kitty doll, while the rest of her body was discarded. The sewing of Fan’s skull in a Hello Kitty doll earned this case the name Hello Kitty Murder.

8. Fan’s Skull, One Tooth and Some Internal Organs were Found after One Suspect led Police to the Scene
After Lau led police to the scene on May 24, only her skull, one tooth, and some internal organs were recovered in a plastic bag. 9. The 3 Suspects of the Hello Kitty Murder were Handed Life Sentences
The trial of the three suspects took over six weeks. On 7th December 2000, the men were convicted of manslaughter due to the jury ruling that the remains of Fan were not sufficient to show whether she died from a drug overdose.
The jury was not sure whether the men had intentions of killing Fan which led to their determination that she had died of the abuse from the suspects. However, Lau testified at the trial to get immunity which he never got.
Justice Peter Nguyen sentenced them to life in prison with the possibility of parole. Some psychiatric reports revealed that the murderer suspected had no remorse. Chan and Leung are currently serving their sentences in Stanley prison.
10. The Apartment of the Hello Kitty Murder was Demolished and a Hotel was Built Later
After the trial and the sentencing, there were several aftermaths of the Hello Kitty Murder. In September 2012, the apartment building where the murder took place was demolished. However, in 2016, a huge hotel was erected on the same site.
