Anwar Ibrahim also called Anwar bin Ibrahim was born on August 10, 1947, in Cherok Tok Kun, Bukit Mertajam, Penang, Malaya which is currently known as Malaysia. His famously known for participating in various political activities and holding many government posts in the late 20th century in Malaysia. He also helped to Islamise the whole government system and played a major role in the Islamisation of the education system when he was, the minister of education in the 1980s. 1. He held various government positions

Anwar started his political career when he founded the Youth Organization in Malaysia. After he joined the major party in the long-time ruling that is the United Malays National Organization, he began to hold several high-profile cabinet positions in successive governments. He was the Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia from 1993- 1998.

He also served as Minister of Finance, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports in 1983; Minister of Agriculture in 1984; and Minister of Education in 1986. He was also the Chairman of the Development Committee of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund in 1998 and President of UNESCO’s General Conference.     

2. He was a lecturer

Anwar Ibrahim was the Malaysia Professor of Islam in Southeast Asia at the Alwaleed Bin Talal Center for Muslim- Christian Understanding at the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University, where he lectured on contemporary politics in Southeast Asia focusing on the role of Islam in shaping the region’s political evolution. He has held lecturing positions at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and St. Anthony’s college at Oxford University.

He has also lectured extensively around the world on governance and accountability, the relationship between Islam and democracy, and the need for greater civilization dialogue and politics in Malaysia and Southeast Asia. He remains involved in the centre’s activities and lectures on American campuses during his frequent visits to the United States.

Anwar Ibrahim is a known writer of several articles and speeches on the relationship between Islam and democracy, governance and accountability, the need for greater civilization dialogue and contemporary politics in Malaysia. 4. He protested against rural poverty and hunger

In 1974, Anwar Ibrahim was arrested during student protests against poverty and hunger. This came as a report surfaced stating that a family died from starvation in a village called Baling. This report was later presented to be not true.

However, rubber tappers were experiencing severe hardship after the reduction of rubber prices in 1974. He spent 20 months in Kamunting Detention Centre after he was imprisoned under the Internal Security Act, which allows for detention without trials. While in prison he advanced his studies and worked on his master’s through the National University of Malaysia

5. He was convicted of corruption and sodomy

On 14 April 1999, Anwar was sentenced to six years in prison for corruption and on 8 August 2000, nine years in prison for sodomy. The sentences were to be served consecutively, and Anwar was given no credit for the six months he spent in jail during the trial. The following year Anwar’s corruption conviction was upheld in Malaysia’s Court of Appeal and he lost his final appeal against the corruption conviction. In September 2004, the court overturned his sodomy conviction.

Again in 2008, Anwar was charged with sodomising a male aide and was tried in 2010 and 2011 but in January 2012 he was acquitted. The acquittal was overturned In March 2014 and he was convicted and imposed a sentence of five years imprisonment. He served the sentence in Sungai Buloh prison before being pardoned in May 2018.

6. He was the founder of the Youth Organization

The Politician, Anwar Ibrahim started his political career in the late 1960s at the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur, where he became known as an Islamist student leader. In 1971 he founded the Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia and served as its president until 1982 when he was invited by prime minister Mahathir bin Mohammed to join United Malays National Organization (UMNO) and his government. He accepted despite his criticism of the ruling National Front Coalition and its most powerful component.

Anwar Ibrahim undertook his secondary education at the Malay College Kuala Kangsar and his degree at the University of Malaya where he acquired his bachelor’s degree in Malay studies. When he was in University Anwar was the president and a member of the Youth Movement of Malaysia, which he co-founded. He was also elected as the 2nd president of the Malaysian Youth Council. He advanced his studies and worked on his master’s in Literature through the National University of Malaysia while in prison from 1974 to 1975.

8. He was named as a top-four finance minister

When he rose in, he rose in his political career he was appointed as the Minister of finance in 1991. During his time as the finance minister, he made sure there was economic growth and unprecedented prosperity in Malaysia. Because of the immediate impact on the finance department, he was named as a top-four finance minister by Euromoney shortly after he became finance minister. In 1996 Asia money named him finance minister of the year.

During the 1997 Asian financial crisis, Anwar was hailed for guiding Malaysia through a period of instability. He backed free market principles and highlighted the proximity of business and politics. He reinforced accountability and refused to offer government bail-outs and initiated widespread spending cuts.

9. He attempted to rename the national anthem

In 1986 when he was the education minister he introduced numerous policies to the national school curriculum. One of the numerous changes was to rename the national language from Bahasa Malaysia to Bahasa Malayu. However, the people not from Malaya criticized this move as it would have caused the younger generation to be detached from the national language since they will assign it to be something that belongs to Malays and not to the Malaysians. He also played a major role in the Islamicisation of the education system during his tenure as an education minister

10. He called for people of all faith to recognize LGBT

In various Interviews, Anwar Ibrahim stated that he opposes gay marriages and upholds the sanctity of marriage between men and women but he stated that the laws of sodomy must be changed to ensure private affairs are not penalized. He further called for people of all faith, races and society in general to oppose efforts to recognize LGBT people and also, they should rise and say that although the majority opposes LGBT tendencies and their ideas, they should accept them.
