Nina Foch was born in 1924 on the 20th of April, in Leyden, Zuid-Holland, Netherlands. Nina Consuelo Maud Fock was her birth name. She was born to her parents Consuelo Flowerton and Dirk Fock. Consuelo Flowerton was an actress and singer, while her father Dirk Fock was an acclaimed classical music composer and conductor in the Amsterdam Concert Gebouw Orchestra.
She was a distinguished actress whose career spanned over six decades. She received various accolades in the various Films and Television shows she featured in. Some of her most momentous works are; Spartacus, An American in Âé¶¹APP, Executive Suite, and The Ten Commandments.
1. She is American and Dutch
Nina Foch was born to an American mother and a Dutch father. When she was still quite young her parents got divorced. Nina ended up with her mother who moved them to America.
Nina grew up in New York where she studied sculpture, painting, and piano. She attended Lincoln School and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts later on. She was urged on to take up acting since it had piqued her interest. She learned the art of acting under Stella Adler and Lee Strasberg.
2. Nina Foch changed her name
Nina later moved to Los Angeles which was the heart of the movie industry. She changed her name from Nina Fock to Nina Foch when her professional career kick-started.
One of the reasons behind her change of name was that Foch was a better fit for a stage name. It is also assumed that she did change her name because of the relationship between her and her estranged father.
3. She had a remarkable career in acting
Nina Foch had a marvelous acting career that spans over 60 years. She had her debut at nineteen years after signing a contract with Colombia Pictures. She frequently starred in studio horror and film thrillers/noir such as ‘The Return of the Vampire’ (1943) and ‘My name is Julia Ross’ (1945).
She made her Broadway debut in 1947 while playing the part of Mary in John loves Mary. She starred in other Broadway productions including Twelfth Night (1949), Measure for Measure (1955), King Lear (1950), and William Shakespeare plays.
She was quite prominent in the 40s and 50s when she played the character of a cool, distant, and cunning woman. She has been featured in over fifty films and has had as many as over one hundred television appearances.

Nina gained traction in her roles in An American in Âé¶¹APP (1951) which was a musical film. Her role in Executive Suites (1954) scored her the Best Supporting Actress in the Academy Award.
5. She is Emmy-Nominated
Foch had many notable roles in television, especially in the 1950s. She appeared in a guest role in Lou Grant’s episodes. In 1960 she was nominated for a primetime award in the Emmy. She was also accorded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for her work in ‘Lou Grant’.
6. Nina Foch was a beloved teacher
When Nina’s acting roles began to dwindle during the 1960s, she ventured into teaching and coaching. For at least four decades, Foch was a dedicated teacher at the University of Southern California Film School and the American Film Institute Studies Centre.
Ed Zwick, Randal Kleiser, Marshall Herskovitz, Julie Andrews and Amy Heckerling were among her students. They all agree on the fact that Nina was among the few teachers who were life-changing and gave a renewed and thought-provoking perspective, on both professional and personal relationships.
Her love for teaching continued up until her last day on earth. She felt unwell while teaching one of her courses at the University of Southern California and was rushed to the hospital.
7. Foch tried her hand at Directing
Nina always had an interest in directing and opened an acting studio. She is said to have taken up an assistant director role in ‘The Diary of Anne Frank’ (1959). She was a co-director alongside actress Deborah Raffin in’ Family Blessings’ (1996), which was a LaVyrle Spencer novel-based television movie.
Foch was an assistant producer in the production of ‘John Houseman’ alongside directors such as Randal Kleiser, George Stevens, and Ron Woodward. She gave up the directing ambition in favor of teaching, which she said was the most profound and gratifying embankment in life.
8. She has been married three times
Nina Foch was married thrice in her lifetime. James Lipton, who was the host of the ‘Inside the Actors Studio’ series, an actor, American writer, lyrist, and a dean emeritus at the Actor Studio Drama School at Pace University, was her first husband. Their marriage was between 1954 and 1958.
She was later married to Dennis de Brito who was a television writer. Dennis was nominated for the Writer Guild of America Award for Television. During the period of her marriage to Dennis de Brito (1959-1963) she conceived and gave birth. The two shared a son by the name of Doctor Dirk de Brito who was born in 1960.
Her final marriage was to Michael Dewell, a theatre producer in 1966. They later on divorced in 1993. Her marriage to Michael was the longest, spanning over 20 years.
9. She died at 84 years
Nina Foch died at the age of 84 while in Los Angeles. She felt unwell while holding her class at the UCS School of Cinematic Arts. She passed on at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Centre in 2008, 5th of December.
She had contracted myelodysplasia, a blood disorder that hinders the production of blood cells. Nina Foch died due to Myelodysplasia complications as confirmed by her son.
She was cremated at the Neptune Society of Sherman Oaks and her remains were handed to the guardianship of her son.
10. Nina Foch is survived by one child
During her second marriage to Dennis de Brito, Nina Foch gave birth to a son by the name of Dirk de Brito.Dirk de Brito is a practicing Doctor who graduated from the Colombian University of Physicians and Surgeons in 1997. Doctor Brito has three children.
Nina Foch was a prolific actress, coach, and teacher who will be remembered for her contribution to the Hollywood industry.
