1 Made appearances in More than 150 Films

Gough was far beyond a mere actor, He was a Legend. Michael Gough was a British actor whose face was common on the screens. Due to his outstanding acting skills, he was able to land recurring roles and opportunities. Gough made over 150 Film and television appearances which brought him closer and closer to his success.

He is known for his first role in the Horror Film Dracula and his recurring role as Alfred Penny Worth in all four of the Batman Films. He also appeared in three more Burton films In Sleeping Hollow, voicing Elder Gutkecht in Corpse Bride and the Dodo in Alice in Wonderland. These are just but a few of the many films he was a part of.

2 Considers Himself British

Despite Gough being born in Malaysia, He considers himself British. He was born on 23 November in Kuala Lumpur, Federation of Malaya state.  Gough has the same birthday as his co-star Boris Karloff and they co-starred in the Crimsom Cult.

Cough was the son of English parents Francis Berkeley who was a rubber painter and Frances Atkins. Gough went to school at Role Hill Tunbridge Wells and Durham School.

3 Got known for Horror Film

With his wonderful acting skills, Gough got known for his appearances in Horror movies. His character mainly features him as a slimy villain. In 1958 he acts as Arthur Holmwood in the Hammers Originals “Dracula”. This US film was retitled Horror of Dracula to avoid confusion with the Originals of Universal Pictures, 1931 Dracula.

Others include 1957 Horrors of the Black Museum, 1961 Konga 1962 The Phantom of the Opera, 1963 Black zoo, 1970 Trog, 1971 The Corpse 1973 Horror Hospital and 1976 Satan’s Slave. In 1965 he continued to showcase his horror persona in the comedy-horror “What a Carve Up”

Despite playing the charter on the screen, He voiced “Batman, The Lazarus syndrome in 1989 and 1994 adaptation of “Batman Knight Fall which consists of storylines that ran from 1993 to 1994.

He is also voiced as Elder Gutknecht, an ancient and rickety skeleton who rules Benevointly over the underworld. This was in the animation “Corpse Bride” which was dedicated to executive producer Joe Ranft who died in a car crash during production. In 1940 he married his first wife Diana Graves, two years later they had a son named Simon Peter. They divorced in 1948. That’s when he met his second wife Anne Elizabeth Leon and they married in 1950. Three years later their daughter Emma Francis was born and they divorced in 1964.

“Doctor who’s” actress, Anneke Wills was his third wife. She is best known for her role as the doctor who companions poly in the series doctor who. They met at various times in her life but they first met formally on the set of candidates for” Murder”. Gough adopted Will’s daughter and three years later their son Jasper was born. In 1980 He married his fourth wife Henrietta Lawrence and they stayed married till his death.

Gough had many talents, one of them was a comedy, at the national theatre in London Gough shined as a comedian. In 1977 he played as a resigned parent in Bedroom farce by Alan Ayckbourn. This is a comedy demonstrating the difference between young and old couples. It is a clever use of time and space since the comedy contains a series of events that occur within similar moments of one another.

When the comedy transferred to Broadway in 1978, He won the Tony Award that recognized his excellence in Broadway theatre. He also appeared in the comedy film known as Top Secret alongside Val Kilmer who would also be a co-worker later in the film Batman Forever.

Gough’s talent in acting was widely recognized. His performance and hard work allowed him to be nominated for various awards in the acting industry. Gough won the Broadway 1997 Tony Awards as Best Actor for Bedroom farce.In1998 he was also nominated for Best Actor for “Breaking the Code”.

In 1957 Gough won a BAFTA Award and was also nominated for a BAFTA Award for his work in “The Go Between.”.He was also nominated for a Drama Desk award for outstanding featured Actor in a play for “Bedroom Farce” and “Breaking The Code” in the years 1979 and 1988 simultaneously.

8 Plays in all Four Batman Films

Gough was one of the two actors who fully appeared in all four Batman films in the Burton Series. The other actor was Pat Hinge. He played Alfred Pennyworth in the film Batman (1989) and Batman Return in 1992. Ne then returned to his role in Batman Forever in 1995 and then Batman and Robin in 1997.

His role in Batman film is the Butler who is faithful to his master. He played with three different batman actors throughout the series of films. His trade mark was his deep resonated Voice.

9 People can’t let him go

Gough retired in 1999 but despite that, he still made an appearance in various films. His retirement came after appearing in Burtons “Sleepy Hollow” which was a gothic supernatural horror film that follows a plot twist of police being sent to investigate a series of murders in Sleepy Hollow.

He would later also emerge from retirement twice more. The favours were to Burton to voice Elder Gutkcher in “Corpse Bride” and the Dodo in “Alice in Wonderland”. At the age of 94 on 17th March 2011 Gough dies from Pneumonia and his body was cremated.

10 Father-in-law to Sharon Gurney

Gough was the father in Law of Sharon Gurney. She is married to his son Simon Gough. The couple played his son and daughter in the Crucible of Horror in 1971. She is also the daughter of the Upstairs Downstairs actress Rachel Garner and Jasper a Photographer. Michael Gough is also a Former brother in Law of John standing as the half-brother of Anne Leon.
