Are you a fan of basketball? I know I can’t openly say I am a fan of Orlando Magic because I’ll create bias. Well, Deni Avdija is a professional basketball player born on 3rd January 2001. His Nationality is an Israeli-Serbian. His mother is of ethnic Jewish descent while his famous father  Zufer Avdija is of Gorani-Muslim descent.

1. Basketball runs in the blood of his family

He is the general manager and president f Basketball operations for Bnei Herzliya of the Israeli Basketball Premier League. He played for Crvena Zvezda in the Yugoslav Basketball League in the 1980s.

In the 1990s the Israel clubs he played for are Ramat HaSharon, Rishon LeZion, Hapoel Tel Aviv, and Bat Yam. He also presented  Yugoslavia Basketball Team internationally. 

Sharon Artzi, the mother was also an athlete and a basketball player. It’s evident that the family is full of passion for basketball.

2. He is physically fit

5. He is a three-pointer shooter

His free throw shooting is not as fierce as his otherwise versatile shooting. He stands and times skillfully when at the 3-point zone. On 9 January 2021, he hit five three-pointers and had accumulated 20 points for his team in the game with Miami Heat where they lost 128-124. 

6. His mandatory military was deferred

Did you know that when you reach 18 in Israel you must serve in the military? Well, when Deni reached 18, his mandatory service in the Israeli Defence Forces was deferred due to his basketball career. 

This was a special case then that one of Alona Tal who was allowed to carry on with her acting career while she served in the mandatory defense forces. Before we know if there is another exemption from the military service in Israel, Deni holds the record. 

In Israel’s Defence forces women only serve in the military for only 24 months while men serve in the military for 32 months. Deni was drafted though to IDF for the short term while the basketball season was suspended due to COVID-19

7. Deni has many honors

 On 31 January Deni was named Israeli Player of the Month in the Israeli Basketball Premier League. This was after his averages that month were 14.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game, with an 18.3 PIR (Performance Index Rating), in four games that month.

8. He received EuroLeague Magic Moment of the season

This is the award for the European top-tier level EuroLeague’s most spectacular play of the season. The award began in 2016-17 Seasons sponsored by Turkish Airlines. Fans are the ones that select the winner o the award online.

Deni’s Dunk over Luigi Datome, an Italian professional basketball player for Olimpia Milano of the LBA, during the game, gave him the award.

9. Deni was declared for the 2020 NBA Draft

His professionalism on the basketball court gave him the courage to appeal for the NBA Draft. NBA Draft expert Erick Fawcett said that Avdija plays with typical fundamentals and polish everyone has seen from European talent but his blend of skills and North American boldness makes him so enticing.

He further added that the fact that he plays with unmistakable finesse at 6’9 makes him one of the most fascinating players in the class. The positive compliment by Fawcett ranked Deni between the 3rd and 7th pick in the Draft. 

He was selected the 9th overall pick for the 2020 NBA Draft by the Washington Wizards after he slipped from the 5th pic on the night of the Draft. He signed a rookie contract with the Washington Wizards in st December 2020.

10. He also plays for his country’s national basketball team

As a professional basketball player, Deni Avdija plays for Washington Wizards as a professional mercenary. Actually, he represents his team internationally. He made his debut on 24 February 2019 for the Israel Senior National Team, in an 81-77 win over Germany, in the 2019 FIBA World Cup Qualification stage.

On 24 February 2020 in the 87-63 victory over Romania during the EuroBasket 2021 qualifiers, Deni recorded 21 points and 8 rebounds in 24 minutes.

The winger has a star potential that is always noticeable when he is in the game. He owns creativity which is a key source on the basketball court. He is ready to give it all for the same of his team regardless of rankings during the game. He is not the player to lose hope easily.
