Cathedral Island is the oldest part of Wrocław which is a city in the southwestern part of Poland. The cathedral island was formerly an island between the branches of the Oder River. The island has a lot of history that is important to the people of Wrocław and history enthusiasts. 1 Meeting place for 3 long-lost brothers

Three brothers, Lech, Czech and Rus decided to meet on this tiny island after a long period of not seeing each other. They decided to name the place “poznac” after the Polish word for “meet”. From then the Island thrived with a castle erected in the 9th century and Ostrow Tumski becoming a major centre of the piast state. One of Poland’s first rulers ushered in catholicism and the first bishopric was established in 968.

Cathedral island is one of the oldest. Pope John Paul II described the place as “Poland began here”. In place in the early 10th century Miezko, I founded a castle. Soon after, a cathedral was erected. In the seventh decade of the tenth century, the castle was extended and surrounded by a mighty wall.

In 1945 there was a battle to liberate Poznan,65 % of the cathedral sadly burned down, which exposed the buildings’ Gothic elements. After the 1945 fire, the church faced a restoration that brings out the structure people see today.

The crypt of the cathedral island is indeed worth looking at. It is rich in history and holds the remains of brominate people in the land. The cathedral has two tombs one for the first polish monarchs Mieszko I and king Bowleslaw Chrobry.

The second Crypt houses things found during excavation like plates and stones. It also leads to the crypt of the Poznan Archbishops. The crypt lights are motion sensors and if you stand and look for too long, they turn off and you might find yourself in the dark.

The golden chapel was designed as the mausoleum of the first polish monarchs and houses the sarcophagi of kings Mieszko I and Boleslaw Chrobry, the two kings are also depicted in a bronze monument together.

The current style of the church is Gothic, this is after the numerous fire destruction. Gothic architecture is an architectural style that was prevalent in Europe from the 12 to 16th century during the High and late Middle Ages, surviving into the 17th and 18th centuries in some areas.

This style is found in many Christian churches as well as abbeys and parish churches. It is also the architecture of many castles’ palaces and town halls, and universities. Many of the finest gothic architecture is listed with UNESCO and World Heritage Sites.

7 Surrounded by other buildings of interest

The cathedral is centrally located and is surrounded by different historical sites. Some of these sites include the church of the virgin Mary, built in the 15th century, and well preserved gothic building. The Psalmodists House, originally built by Lubranski in the early 16th century, and the Seminary buildings go back to the early 19th century.

There is also the Lubranski Academy building that is now being used as the archives and the museum of the archdioceses.
