The Golden Gate by Avishai teicher-

The Golden Gate was created from 1612 to 1614 in place of a 13th-century gate that was known as the Long Street Gate. The gate is located at one end of the Ulica Długa which translates to Long Lane in English. Together with the Highland Gate and the Prison Tower, it forms a portion of the old city fortifications. Its location is great in that it is situated within the Royal Route which is the most well-known part of the historic city centre.

2 Its architectural style

The gate’s architectural style employs the northern mannerist style. Mannerism was popular in Europe in the 16th century. The style adopts an ornate aesthetic which is also extravagant and it can be seen in how the gate is built.

The mannerist style in Poland employed various mannerist traditions that were closely related to the ethnic and religious diversity as well as the political and economic state at that time. Therefore, the gate can give the tourist insight into the state of the town when it was being built as the state of affairs determined the style.

3 It was designed by Abraham Van den Blocke

The gate was designed by Abraham Van den Blocke who is the son of the man who built the upland gate. It was built by Jan Strakowski. The Dutch mannerism in which the gate was built using gives it a unique charm and makes it attractive as the style was heavily invested in decorative styles. This concept made the gate stand out as next to it is the late gothic building of the brotherhood of St. George. Next to it, a notable contrast is created.

4 The gate has attiques

Both sides of the gate feature attiques with figures that symbolize the qualities of a good citizen. The attiques were designed by Jeremias Falck in 1648 but they had to be reconstructed in 1878 as they were damaged by the weather over time. The concept of having the qualities of a good citizen on the gate is interesting and genius as it makes the gate of value to the people of the town as it contains something that they can resonate with.

5 The west side of the gate

The west side of the gate has inscriptions written in Latin to represent Peace, Freedom, Wealth and Fame. The qualities can give a visitor insight into what people during that era found to be important. This is because the inscriptions would not have been written on the gate if those were not the popular opinions that people in that era held.

6 The east side of the Golden Gate

On the east side of the wall on the Golden gate, there are also inscriptions written in Latin to represent Agreement, Justice, Piety and Prudency. These qualities resound with most visitors and the town as they are some of the core values that one needs to succeed. On the gate, there is an inscription that translates “In agreement, small republics grow, because of disagreement great republics fall”.

These values and the statement also show the visitors how the town withstood the frequent border changes that led to the displacement of its citizens and also how it became the birthplace of the Polish Solidarity Movement.

7 The gate was destroyed in 1957

The gate was largely destroyed by Soviet artillery fire during World War II but was rebuilt in 1957. After the city became part of the Polish People’s Republic in 1945, most German remains were exterminated, but the original German inscription gate was restored in the 1990s.

The text said, “Es müsse wohl gehen denen, die dich lieben. Es müsse Friede sein inwendig in deinen Mauern und Glück in deinen Palästen“ which translates to ” Whoever loves you shall prosper. There shall be peace within your walls, and happiness within your palaces.”
