All construction was done in 1287 making it popular. This is because the castle was built in a fast-paced using limited tools that were available in the 13th century.

Edward Woodstock who was the eldest son of Edward the third took over the castle in 1343. However, when he died the castle fell into disrepair but some repairs were made during the reign of Henry V111. The castle was intentionally damaged again during the English Civil war so that the castle could not be used as a military base in the conflict.

By the 18th century, the castle was ruined. Since it attracted a lot of tourists, the castle was restored in the 20th century.
