Top 10 Facts about Agios Nikolaos Beach
Agios Nikolaos is a beautiful village nestled in a lush green valley on the island of Kefalonia. It is 35 kilometers from Argostoli and easily accessible by car from Sami to Poros. Agios Nikolaos’ main beach is inviting, set among lush vegetation and pine trees.
In comparison to other beaches on the island, the area is tranquil, making it an ideal location for solitude. The beach is made up of sand with a few rocks on the sides. There are no tourist facilities, only a pleasant shaded tavern near the picturesque marina.
1. The ocean has high waves

Agios Nikolaos beach is named after the small chapel of Agios Nikolaos and is located near Anavyssos, approximately 40 kilometers from Athens. The first section of Agios Nikolaos Beach is shallow, resulting in fast-moving waves. The chance of high waves is much higher when the wind is strong, but if you go to Agios Nikolaos the day after the full moon, you will have the best chance!
Some people go to the beach solely for the purpose of jumping in the waves. Skimboard owners are sure to have a good time. Be cautious of going to the side due to the stream; there are rocks here that you don’t want to run into.
2. The beach has a volleyball field
During the main season, a group of beach volleyball fans gets together in the afternoon to compete. It used to be that two pillars were dug up every year. Every year, Manolis, the owner of the Stema Bar, organized this. Two professional poles have been installed for several years and will remain in place throughout the winter. It is pretty evident how serious these competitions are.
3. There are parties held every Sunday

In the afternoon, the KarPassion Beach Bar regularly plays good music. However, every Sunday afternoon at 4p.m, a DJ plays exclusively. That is when the extra party takes place, which attracts numerous young people (including many locals). What’s not to love about finishing the weekend with a nice drink on the beach and some loud music in the background?
4. The sand is inhabited by small crabs

There are all kinds of small crabs in the early season, April/May, when there are few tourists. When you walk on the beach, you can see their holes. There’s no need to be afraid because there’s a very small chance they’ll bite you with their claws. Crabs are typically more afraid of you.
5. The beach has breathtaking sunset views

Due to the beach’s location on the western side of Karpathos, the setting sun is particularly lovely in Arkassa. It completely vanishes in the sunlight. Take a drink or a snack to enjoy on the beach. Passion Beach Bar also has a fantastic view of the setting sun. The most beautiful place to watch the sunset in Arkassa is the Stema Bar.
6. Archeological discoveries have been made near the beach
Archaeological discoveries of all kinds have been made in Arkassa, which can be seen at the Chapel of Agia Sophia, which is near the beach. The quickest way is to drive or ride a scooter there, but you can also walk to the chapel. Some tourists have previously reported having discovered marble pillars on the beach of Agios Nikolos to the interest of archaeologists.
7. The paleokastro hill is next to the beach
Paleokastro hill has a hiking path that leads to the ruins of Arkesia, an ancient city. The view is spectacular, with views of Agios Nikolaos beach and Arkassa village. Agia Sofia is a Byzantine church built on a hill with mosaic floors. Agia Sofia and Paleokastro are two significant historical and religious monuments. The scenery is stunning, with views of the Aegean Sea.
8. The best time to visit the beach is in August
August is the month with the highest temperature in Agios Nikolaos. Its average temperature is 28 °C. The warmest month is August, with an average temperature of 24 °C. The coldest month is January, with an air temperature of 14 °C and water temperature of 17 °C.
9. Agios Nikolaos chapel is a prominent landmark near the beach

The small Agios Nikolaos Church is the sparkling jewel of Georgioupoli and one of the most photographed landmarks in this part of Crete. It is, in fact, a whitewashed chapel built on a small rocky islet that is difficult to reach on foot.
Agios Nikolaos Church appears to emerge from the Aegean Sea due to its location. The chapel is named after St. Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors. The same saint who inspired the Santa Claus legend.
The charming white chapel is a popular wedding venue on Crete, and many couples choose it not only for Greek Orthodox ceremonies, but also for photographs and memories that will last a lifetime.
10. The beach hosts Greece’s Stand-Up Paddleboarding events
On September 24 and 25, Agios Nikolaos, a coastal town on the Greek island of Crete, hosted Agios Nikolaos on SUP 2022, one of Greece’s largest SUP events. The event was in its seventh year, and every effort was made to provide both athletes and spectators with a premium SUP show experience, with a prize pot of €6,000. The competitions and award ceremony took place concurrently with the Cliff Diving event at Agios Nikolaos Lake.
Agios Nikolaos is a well-established tourist destination. Its beautiful coastline is home to mostly five-star hotels, but the area also caters to visitors on a tighter budget. This event is usually organized by the municipal company, the municipal sport and culture organization, and the local SUP clubs with the primary goal of attracting an audience and advertising our great hospitality and beaches.
