On 2 October 1980, the coaster MV Panagiotis ran aground in the waters around Zakynthos Island on Navagio Beach. It was during stormy weather and bad visibility.

The ship was making its way from Turkey with a freight of contraband cigarettes. The Panagiotis was heading to Italy.

The ship was abandoned by the crew after encountering stormy weather. They were evading the pursuing Navy. The ship was abandoned and still rests buried in the limestone gravel of the beach, thus the name Shipwreck beach.

The best months to visit the beach are May-June and late September-October. However, boats may leave at other times of the year upon request.

If you do visit in July-August, do so in the early morning or late afternoon when it鈥檚 cooler and quieter. Additionally, Visitors are advised to inquire in advance about the weather conditions. Considering that often and especially in the afternoon the sea tends to be turbulent. Moreover, boat ride schedules may be affected by this.
