1. Sir Joshua Hassan
Sir Joshua Abraham Hassan was a Gibraltarian politician who became Gibraltar’s first mayor and Chief Minister. He was one of the members of the 1968 Constitutional Conference that wrote Gibraltar’s first Constitution.
Hassan was knighted by the late Queen Elizabeth II in 1963 and is seen as the key figure in the civil rights movement in Gibraltar. He was nicknamed “Salvador” which means ‘Saviour’. Hassan is remembered for opposing Spain’s claim to Gibraltar and insisting that most Gibraltarians wanted to remain British.
He also played a key role in the creation of the territory’s institutions of self-government. Hassan was a successful lawyer and his private practice, Hassan’s International Law Firm, is now the largest in that territory.
2. Lee Casciaro
Lee Henry Casciaro is a Gibraltarian footballer who plays as a forward for Lincoln Red Imps and the Gibraltar national team. He was born on 29th September 1981 in Gibraltar.
With three international goals, he is Gibraltar’s all-time leading scorer since joining UEFA. For his services to sport in Gibraltar, he was awarded the Gibraltar Medallion of Distinction in August 2019.
Casciaro is a policeman for the Gibraltar Defense Police and has appeared 51 times for the national team. He captained Gibraltar for the first time against Liechtenstein on 10 October 2020.
His brothers Kyle and Ryan are footballers and have played with Gibraltar’s national team.
3. Christian Hook
Christian Hook is a Gibraltarian contemporary artist. He was born in Gibraltar in 1971. He studied illustration at Middlesex University in the United Kingdom and then worked as a part-time lecturer at the Royal College of Art in London.
Hook works as a full-time artist, challenging himself to create paintings “depicting motion, time, and the moments that occur between events.” With this unique idea, Christian has created paintings of celebrities, historical landmarks, and horses.
He has been commissioned by and produced portraits for figures such as Queen Elizabeth II, Sarah Ferguson, and the Maharaja of Jodhpur, among many others.
During his career, Hook has won several awards, including the Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year in 2014 and the Freedom of the City of Gibraltar in 2017.
4. Ricardo Montez
This Actor was born on 23rd September 1923 in Gibraltar as Levy Isaac Attias. He changed his name to Ricardo Montez when he got into acting.
Montez is best known for his role as Juan Cervantes, the Spanish bartender in a class of mature English language students, in the situation comedy series Mind Your Language.
He appeared in films, television shows as well as commercials. He died of cancer in October 2010, at the age of 87 years.
5. Surianne
Surianne Dalmedo is a Gibraltarian international singer and songwriter of acoustic Latin/Rock/Flamenco music. Her music style is derived from a blend of various cultures, that is Gibraltarian, Spanish, British, and North African.
Inspired by Mediterranean grooves, this musician is strongly influenced by the fusion of acoustic guitar sounds and driving percussive rhythms.
Surianne was honored as being one of the seven most successful women of Gibraltar in celebration of International Women’s Day in 2017. In 2019, she was runner-up in the annual Gibraltar singer-songwriter competition.
6. Willa Vasquez Serfaty
Willa Vasquez Serfaty is a Gibraltarian artist born in Gibraltar in 1954 into an artistic family. From an early age, Willa became a pupil of local artist Leni Mifsud, one of the few women artists who were making their mark in painting.
Willa later studied drawing at the Academia Marqués de Cuba in Madrid and then spent time in Florence, Italy learning new techniques.
She is a prominent figure in the art world in Gibraltar, and all her exhibitions are very successful.
7. Paul Isola
Paul Isola is a Gibraltarian musician and songwriter. He was the lead vocalist in the Flamenco metal band, Breed 77. Isola was one of the original members and founders of the band. He also plays the djembe, piano, flamenco guitar, and palmas.
Being a native Gibraltarian, Isola is naturally bilingual in English and Spanish and uses this ability to his advantage when writing songs. He often incorporates Spanish words and phrases into the band’s lyrics, sometimes writing them fully in Spanish.
Paul owns a multi-media production company in Gibraltar.
8. M G Sanchez
G. Sanchez is a Gibraltarian writer who has written over a dozen books on Gibraltarian identity. His works have been reviewed in literary journals in Europe and the United Kingdom and he has lectured at many universities.
Sanchez’s purpose as a writer and speaker is to present a Gibraltar that feels more real and more tangible than the “contested territory” cliché that readers so often encounter in newspaper editorials.
He was awarded the Cultural Ambassador Award at the Gibraltar Government’s annual culture awards.
9. Amanda Carreras
Amanda Carreras is a British tennis player from Gibraltar. Amanda has won 11 singles and 15 doubles titles and has a total of nine medals, eight of them being gold.
She is one of Gibraltar’s finest sportswomen and is ranked fourth all-time player amongst female British tennis players.
10. John Charles Galliano
John Charles Galliano is a Gibraltarian-Spanish fashion designer. He was the creative director of his label John Galliano and French fashion houses Givenchy and Dior.
Since 2014, Galliano has been the creative director of 鶹APP-based fashion house Maison Margiela. Galliano has been named British Designer of the Year four times.
In a 2004 poll for the BBC, he was named the fifth most influential person in British culture. Thereafter, he was on the “pink list” of ‘The Independent on Sunday for being one of the most influential gay people in Britain in 2007.
He is a vegetarian.
