Ghana, officially the Republic of Ghana, is a country in West Africa.  Ghana has a budding and thriving film industry.  Ghana’s film industry dates as far back as 1948 when the Gold Coast Film Unit was set up in the Information Services Department.

Many Ghanaian films are co-produced with Nollywood, and the Nigerian film industry and some are distributed by Nigerian marketers.  The movie industry in Ghana has no official name as yet since consultations and engagements with stakeholders has been ongoing when a petition was sent to the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture which suspended the use of the name Black Star Films. 

New and emerging young filmmakers are adding spice to the already rich Ghana movie scene. Let us look at the 10 most famous Ghanian Actors.

1. Van Vicker

Joseph van Vicker better known as Van Vicker, is a Ghanaian actor, movie director, and humanitarian. He is the chief executive officer of Sky + Orange production, a film production house. 

Vicker is usually cast as the male romantic lead, often alongside actresses Jackie Appiah and Nadia Buari. Van Vicker received two nominations for Best Actor in a Leading Role and Best Upcoming Actor at the Africa Movie Academy Awards in 2008.

2. Majid Michel

Majid Michel is a Ghanaian actor, model, television personality, evangelist, and humanitarian. 

Michel is one of the Ghanaian actors who got into the film industry during the period in which Frank Rajah Arase signed a contract with Ghana’s Abdul Salam Mumuni of Venus Films. The contract basically involved introducing Ghanaian actors into the mainstream Nollywood film industry and making them have a star power comparable to Nigerian actors.

Majid has received nominations for Best Actor in a Leading Role at the Africa Movie Academy Awards in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, and 2017. He eventually won the award in 2012 after three previous consecutive nominations.

3. Yvonne Okoro

 Yvonne Okoro is a Ghanaian-Nigerian actress. Born to a Nigerian dad and Ghanaian mother, Yvonne Okoro is of mixed lineage and calls herself an African. Yvonne Okoro is from Koforidua in the Eastern Part of Ghana. 

Yvonne received Ghana Movie Awards Best Actress Award in 2010 and was nominated for Africa Movie Academy Awards Best Actress twice in a row in 2011 and 2012 for her movies Pool Party and Single Six. She has also received four Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Award and in 2012 was honored with a Distinguished Achievement Award at the Nigeria Excellence Awards.

4. Eddie Nartey

Eddie Nartey is a Ghanaian actor, director, and film producer. His supporting role in Frank Rajah’s Somewhere In Africa earned him a nomination at the Nollywood and African Film Critics Awards (NAFCA), and Ghana movie awards. 

Eddie was nominated in the best actor category for Kiss Me If You Can. He got his first opportunity to do his directorial debut entitled Could This Be Love where he co-wrote the movie with Evelyn, which cast Actors like Majid Michel, Kwadwo Nkansah (Lil Win), Nana Ama Mcbrown, Fred Amugi, and Gloria Sarfo.

5. Grace Nortey 

Grace Nortey is a veteran Ghanaian actress who has played several lead roles on Ghanaian television. She has been active in the film, theatre, and drama industry for over five decades and is considered one of the ace actresses and pioneers of Ghanaian theatre and drama.

Grace’s popularity is largely attributed to numerous onscreen confrontations. Some of her most memorable onscreen confrontations involve lengthy, passionate but hilarious verbal altercations with these dominant men, with both sides refusing to back down. Her outstanding performances in these roles as a firm and assertive matriarch who sought justice have earned her a great deal of affection and popular acclaim among viewers and critics alike.

6. David Dontoh

David Kwame Dontoh is a veteran Ghanaian actor and television personality who has starred in numerous local and international films, drama, theatre, and other stage productions. 

Dontoh has been very influential in the development of television and drama, especially during the golden age of theatre in Ghana in the 80s and 90s.

7. Akofa Edjeani

Akofa Edjeani is a Ghanaian veteran film actress, producer, and entrepreneur. Her short film, Not My Daughter, a film about female genital mutilation, won the Best Short Film award at the African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) in 2008

Another one was I Sing of a Well, the movie she starred in and co-produced, which won three awards and the Best Jury Award from African Movie Academy Awards in 2010.

8. Chris Attoh

Chris Attoh is a Ghanaian actor, film director, on-air personality, television presenter, and Producer. He is best known as Kwame Mensah in the Nigerian soap opera Tinsel.

Chris attended the New York Film Academy, Achimota School, and Accra Academy. He then moved on to KNUST where he studied for a Bachelor of Art in Painting degree. He has been featured in a couple of films.

9. Augustine Abbey

Augustine Abbey, also known as Idikoko, is a Ghanaian actor and movie maker known for comedy. 

He is also known for his main roles as a house boy or gate man. He has produced and starred in a BBC documentary and also directed and produced a film on HIV and AIDS in partnership with UNESCO and Esi Sutherland-Addy’s MMOFRA Foundation.

10. Fred Amugi 

Fred Amugi is a Ghanaian-born veteran actor best known for his roles in Holby City, Beasts of No Nation, and The Cursed Ones. He rose to prominence for his role in the 1985 television series Opinto.

Amugi has appeared in numerous movie roles, including local Ghanaian movies, Shoe Shine Boy (2013), Nyame Bekyere 1&2 (2015), Menua Paa Nie (2016), and Housekeepers (2016) among others. 

His first international role came in 2005 when he played the character Kwame Attakora in the BBC drama Holby City. He later starred in the Netflix 2015 movie, Beasts of No Nation as Pastor. Amugi played the character Pastor Uchebo in the 2015 British award-winning movie The Cursed Ones.
