In Wolfsburg, Germany, next to the Volkswagen factory, there is a tourist attraction called The Autostadt that mostly focuses on cars. Henn GmbH created the building complex. The complex includes a museum, feature pavilions for the main Volkswagen Group auto brands, a customer center where customers can pick up new cars and take factory tours, a road evolution guide, and a large-screen movie theater.

1. The idea for Autostadt was started in 1994

The concept for Autostadt was conceived in 1994 when the stages of Volkswagen vehicle manufacture and the company’s operations were exhibited at Expo 2000 in Hanover, Germany.

On the former site of a fuel company neighboring Volkswagen’s Wolfsburg manufacturing facility, Autostadt, which translates to “Automobile City” in German, started construction in 1998.

The Autostadt location lies on the north side of the Mittelland Canal, just like the nearby auto plant. More than 400 architects collaborated to construct the final complex, which was built as a brand-new urban hub near Wolfsburg’s heart.

2. The main pavilion opened in May 2000 

The chance to display iconic vehicles that had previously been locked in boxes to be seen by the public was made possible by the main pavilion’s opening in May 2000 (22 years ago).

At that point, it was estimated that Volkswagen had committed about 850 Million Marks (€435 Million) to the endeavor. Autostadt is close to Volkswagen’s primary factory, which is also a tourist destination. The consumer has the option to select any Volkswagen model because they are all readily available. Between the pavilions, there is an abundant use of plants and water, and there are grass-covered earthen mounds scattered around the grounds. Along with the pavilions, furniture like benches and chairs also features a contemporary design.

4. Visitors get to drive as long as you prove you can

Before using the cars, visitors must be able to demonstrate their driving licenses. The guide first takes the vehicle for a lap of the circuit while displaying its features and explaining its potential.

The tourist can continue driving around the track while being watched by the tour guide sitting in the passenger seat once they have completed one lap. The back is where any additional passengers sit.

The track has a hill that is inclined at 21 degrees, another hill that is angled on the side, a water tank, a sand pit that is under a road bridge, a long road, and various little mounds that allow one wheel to be raised off the ground.

5. There is a mini track for children

Children may drive miniature electric Volkswagen Beetles on a track designed specifically for them.

Software for designing cars is among the wide range of multimedia activities and tools available at Autostadt. The benefits and drawbacks that various fuels have on the performance of cars are displayed in a room. Small German movies are shown at two theaters. One of these theaters is in a huge spherical and situated in its own custom-built buildings. Some well-known automobiles, including the Beetle and the first gasoline-powered car made, are major attractions.

6. There are two 60 meter/200 ft tall glass silos (AutoTürme) used as storage for new Volkswagens

A 700-meter tunnel connects the two towers to the Volkswagen manufacturing facility. Cars are accelerated up the towers at a rate of 1.5 meters per second as they approach.

The Autostadt’s rendering depicts 6 towers. It is optional for customers to have their new Volkswagen (the main brand, not the sub-brands) automobile delivered to the dealership where they made the purchase or to travel to Autostadt to pick it up in a few European nations.  If the latter option is picked, Autostadt offers the client free admission, meal tickets, and a variety of events that culminate in the consumer being able to watch on screen as the automatic elevator scoops up the preferred option.
