Lake Konigssee is a natural lake in the southeast Berchtesgaden Land district of the German state of Bavaria, near the Austrian border. It is famous for being the deepest and cleanest lake in Germany. It was created by glacier activity during the ice age. It is Germany’s third largest Lake.

The survey states that most of the lake is in the Berchtesgadener national park. Berchtesgaden is a town in Bavaria land, southern Germany. It is situated on the Berchtesgadener stream in a deep valley surrounded on three sides by Austrian territory just north of Berchtesgaden national park. The opening of salt mining was the beginning of rivalry for many centuries.

The town became a major resort and recreation centre during the Allied after World War II. In the history of Lake Konigssee, it is said to be beloved by Bavarian Loyalties, and as well as Adolf Hitler that he had a summer home nearby. 1.  Exhibitions at Berchtesgaden National Park

Haus der Berge is the National Park’s information and education centre and is located at the park’s entrance to town facing Watzmann Mountain. The center offers education on the history of the park, has a cinema for showing nature films and also has temporary displays.

The Vertical Wilderness exhibition is the main one and showcases the park’s habitats. The habitat exhibitions extend from the Alpine peaks to the depths of Lake Konigssee in an indoor panoramic display. Outdoor exhibitions include the Alpine which is a historic site whose construction is dated in 1848 and claimed to have been transferred in pieces to Haus der Berge. 

2. Mountain Lakes in Berchtesgaden

Konigssee is the most famous and is located at the foot of Mount Watzmann. The lake extends to the Schonau municipality of Berchtesgaden city. The steep rooks beside the lake are a great attraction for mountain and rock climbers while the flat part serves as a nature and cycling trail. Tourists are also thrilled by the echo produced by the rocks. 

Lake Obersee is a natural mountain lake and less in size compared to Lake Konigssee. It is earmarked by a wooden boathouse and located between mountains. The lake attracts tourists for photo sessions due to its topographical beauty.

Berchtesgaden’s Rothbach waterfall is popular for its two steps and imposing features besides being German’s highest waterfall at 470 meters. The waterfall is located beyond the Talschluss Mountains within a 30 minutes walking distance from Lake Obersee. The location of the waterfall also makes it an attractive destination for nature walks and mountain climbing.

Only electric-powered passenger ships, rowing, and pedal boats are permitted on the lake. In Ideal conditions, the longest tour takes two hours from seelande to salet. Swimming is also permitted except in the lock area at seelande.

8. Natural Facts About Lake Konigssee

It is the cleanest Lake in Germany as, since 1903, restrictions were made that only pedal, rowing, or electric boats have been allowed on it. The lake was originally carved by glaciers thousands of years ago during the ice age. 

The measurements recorded of the lake are as follows, 7.7 KM in length and 1.7 KM at its widest point. On the depth point, it is 190 meters but on average it’s about 100 Meters deep and this makes it the 3rd deepest lake in Germany.

9. Origin of the Name Lake Konigssee

Konigssee appears to be ”King’s lake” however while German: Konig means “king” there have been no Bavarian kings since the days of Louis the German until elector Maximilian Joseph took over the royal title in 1806.

It is however assumed that the name most probably stems from the first name Kuno of local nobles who appear in sources of history referring to the donation of the Berchtesgaden provost in the 12th century, the lake was formerly known as Konigssee.

10. Best Times to Visit Lake Konigssee

The best time to visit Lake Konigssee is during the summer months. To avoid big crowds, then one should avoid visiting in July or August. From April to October, there are daily boat tours that allow you to cross the entire lake and with this, you can visit saint Bartholomeus and Lake Obersee.

In other months the electric boats keep on running but to saint Bartholomeus. It is however concluded from history that May, June, or September are the best months to visit the lake.
