It may be the corniest name ever given to a town west of the Rhineland-Palatinate, but everything has a reason, and in the case of the German town of Beilstein, we would have to take into account two factors: 1. The town is it has been perfectly preserved since the Middle Ages and has the reputation of being the most beautiful town on the Moselle, and 2. Beilstein is on the route of Romantic Germany.

1. In the Middle Ages, Beilstein was created

In the Middle Ages, a town called Beilstein grew up next to the 1080-year-old Hohenbeilstein Castle. The community was given town status between 1250 and 1288, and it is first documented as such in 1304 when the Margraves of Baden took control of the fortress in 1234.

Several times since then, it has had a different overlord. Charles IV received the town as a fief after receiving it from Ulrich IV and Eberhard II. The fief, therefore, reverted to the following emperor or count before any assumption of power, and this continued until the 18th century.

Also a Vogt administrative and habitational centre was Beilstein. It had a wall by the fourteenth century. A Latin school was established there when the Reformation arrived in the town in 1534–1535.

2. Catholics and Protestants engaged in the Thirty Years’ War

Many people were killed during the Thirty Years’ War between Catholics and Protestants as a result of battles, illnesses, and famines. The Wimpfen Battle, which took place in 1622, was close to Beilstein.

The first complaints started around 1623 when troops started living in the town. Lots of horses were taken. When there was a massive crop failure, there was no way to purchase grain because Bavarian soldiers blocked the trade routes to Heilbronn and Schwäbisch Hall. Due to Wallenstein’s troops’ invasion in 1628 and subsequent demand for 65 bushels of grain in 1629, there were additional losses.

Many illnesses were caused by the Battle of Nördlingen. Imperial troops that had won the battle pillaged and burnt many towns and villages while Eberhard III escaped to Straßburg.

Epidemics, famine, and price increases continued to escalate. The populace became poorer as a result of monthly requisitions, creating a hospital for soldiers, and housing soldiers. There were just 39 livable residences in Beilstein in 1641 due to the city’s declining population.

4. Several invasions occurred during the Nine Years’ War

Several French invasions occurred after 1688 during the Nine Years’ War. The French were eventually able to reach Lauffen, but the soldiers of Württemberg defeated them and drove them back.

The French occupied Großbottwar, Oberstenfeld, Beilstein, and Auenstein during the second invasion after destroying Marbach. 105 homes, 30 barns, and the town hall were all destroyed in the nearly total destruction of Beilstein. The town was reconstructed in accordance with Matthias Weiß’s 1693 plans during the course of the following three decades.

5. Beilstein was seat of Oberamt Beilstein between 1803 and 1806

Beilstein served as the home of Oberamt Beilstein between 1803 and 1806 according to a reorganization of Württemberg’s departments. However, it was combined with the Oberamt Marbach four years later. In 1938, this was integrated into Heilbronn’s district. The town started to expand and take down its town gates around 1840. A reduction in population was caused by increased poverty. A large number of people relocated or left their country. 67 individuals migrated between 1851 and 1860.

A considerable upswing in the communities along the railroad was brought on by the Bottwartalbahn, which gradually opened between 1894 and 1900. However, industrial development continued to lag. A public water supply was established between 1907 and 1908. A connection was made between the Pleidelsheim and Beihingen power plants in 1911.

6. Nazification took place in 1933

Beilstein experienced the Gleichschaltung (Nazification)in 1933, as it did everywhere else. There were no anti-Semitic incidents because there were no Jews in the community. 

Various Wehrmacht units were stationed here between 1933 and 1937. The initial physical test for military duty was performed on July 12, 1935. An order to construct air-raid shelters was made in August 1934. Several prisoners of war were housed in Beilstein after hostilities began in 1939.

7. The front line approached in March 1945, and army units entered the town

The town was the target of a significant airstrike on April 16, 1945, in the afternoon, as the front line drew closer and army units invaded the area. One of the most severely hit areas of the region, the attack left about 40% of the town completely destroyed.

It was incredibly challenging to put out every fire the following night. The civilian populace initially concentrated on rescuing their own homes, allowing the already overworked fire force to concentrate on the rest of the town.

8. The Germans continued to put up a lot of resistance as of April 16

The Germans were still putting up a lot of opposition as of April 16. After altering their strategy, the Americans attempted to conquer the town by encircling it. These activities led to numerous casualties.

Due to their local knowledge, the Germans were at an advantage. The first American tanks penetrated Beilstein early on April 19, 1945, despite German soldiers’ tank traps. The Battle of Beilstein lasted the entire day, with fighting continuing until 11 p.m.

9. After World War II, the damage wasn’t fully repaired until 1955

It took until 1955 for the damage from World War II to be repaired. Then Beilstein experienced fresh expansion. There were 280 new homes built on new building plots between 1956 and 1971. Beilstein absorbed the municipality of Schmidhausen on July 1, 1971.

After 1970, the population significantly rose as commuters heading to Heilbronn, Ludwigsburg, and Stuttgart began to prefer Beilstein. Determinate steps were taken to modify the town’s reputation in 1982 as a result of a state initiative of rehabilitation.

10. Beilstein is dominated by the ruins of Metternich Castle

The first written mention of the castle, then known as Bilstein Castle, dates to 1268. With some historians putting the construction year of the castle at 1129, it is believed to be far older.

The castle was the property of the Counts of Nassau-Dillenburg up until the first half of the 17th century. The castle received its current name, Metternich Castle after the House of Metternich acquired it in 1637. Klemens von Metternich, one of the most renowned diplomats in the Austrian Empire, who served as foreign minister from 1809 to 1848, was the last member of the family to own the castle. The fortress was obliterated by French forces in 1689 during the Nine Years’ War.

Although taking a local bus or Moselle river cruise or driving yourself is the fastest and most convenient way to get to Beilstein (seasonal).

A taxi is another option. It is possible for cyclists to arrive here by bicycle, but it requires a lengthy journey from the majority of the other Moselle towns, so verify distances and maps before going off.
