Grass, Günter Wilhelm was a German novelist, poet, playwright, illustrator, graphic artist, and sculptor. In 1999 he won the Nobel Prize for Literature. He was born on October 16, 1927, in the Free City OF Danzig. His parents were Helene Grass and Wilhelm Grass.  Being raised as a Catholic Günter was a child altar boy and also identified himself as the Kashubian. In his family, his mother was a Roman Catholic of Kashubian-Polish ancestry while his father was a Lutheran Protestant of German descent. In Danzig-Langfuhr where he was raised, his parents had a grocery with an apartment above it. Here are the Top 10 Interesting Facts about Gunter Grass:

1. He received the 1999 Nobel prize for Literature

German author Günter Grass  received the 1999 Nobel Prize in Literature for “whose frolicsome black fables portray the forgotten face of history.”  After Heinrich Böll in 1972, he is the eighth German author to win the award.

Several books by Günter Grass were set in the context of Nazi war crimes and World War II. His Danzig Trilogy, which includes Die Blechtrommel (“The Tin Drum,” 1959), Katz und Maus (“Cat and Mouse,” 1963), and Hundejahre, is his most notable work (“Dog Years”, 1963). His books are set in various cities, including Danzig, Gdask, and the city’s alternating German and Polish connections. He creates a sarcastic societal satire by mixing real and autobiographical information with made-up events. 

2. His first book, The Tin Drum, published in 1959, is best known as a foundational work of European magic realism

The Tin Drum,  which is Grass’s debut book, is best known for being a foundational work of European magic realism. His Danzig Trilogy, which also included the books Cat and Mouse and Dog Years, began with this one. Left-wing political elements are frequently seen in his works, and Grass actively supported the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD). The same-named movie, which was adapted from The Tin Drum, won the 1979 Palme d’Or and the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1999 from the Swedish Academy, which praised him as a writer “whose frolicsome black fables portray the forgotten face of history.” 

3. He received many national and international awards

Grass’s writings are frequently categorized as belonging to the Vergangenheitsbewältigung artistic movement in Germany. Which can be loosely translated as “coming to terms with the past.”   However, h, won numerous awards both nationally and internationally.

Grass won the Georg Büchner Prize in 1965. Additionally,y the Royal Society of Literature elected him as an Honorary Fellow in 1993. He was also awarded the Hermann Kesten Prize in 1995.

4. Representatives of the city of Bremen  joined to establish  the Günter Grass Foundation 

The Günter Grass Foundation was founded by representatives of the city of Breme. To create a centralized repository for all of his numerous works, particularly his numerous personal readings, videos, and films. His drawings and sculptures are displayed in the Günter Grass House in Lübeck. The house also has an archive and a library. 

5. He was a member of the Waffen-SS in World War II

In an interview for his upcoming book, Peeling the Onion, in August 2006, Grass revealed that he had served in the Waffen-SS during World War II.  He had previously been regarded as a typical member of the “Flakhelfer generation.” Which is a  group of people who were too young to take part in significant combat or be affiliated with the Nazi regime outside of its youth organizations. 

6. The Literary style of Grass had a major impact

The writing style of Grass has had a significant impact. The grass was dubbed “simply the most original and versatile writer alive” by John Irving. Many people have also pointed out similarities between The Tin Drum and Irving’s A Prayer for Owen Meany. Salman Rushdie has also acknowledged Grass’s influence, particularly in The Tin Drum, and there are many similarities in his own body of work to Grass’s. 

7. He was a supporter  of the Social Democratic Party of the German

Grass supported the Social Democratic Party of Germany and its policies for many years. He frequently participated in political discussions in Germany and around the world. The grass was a vocal supporter of Willy Brandt while he served as chancellor. He not only criticized left-wing radicals but also advocated for democratic reform to proceed at a “snail’s pace,” as he put it (Aus dem Tagebuch einer Schnecke, literally “from the diary of a snail”).

The Tin Drum made Grass one of Germany’s most prominent writers and set a high standard for all of his subsequent works, which were frequently compared negatively to this early work by critics.  Nevertheless, the book could be divisive in West Germany in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and its “immorality” led Bremen to revoke a prize it had given him. The publication of The Tin Drum, according to the Nobel Committee, “was as if German literature had been granted a new beginning after decades of linguistic and moral destruction,” when Grass won the Nobel Prize in literature in 1999.

His major theme in writing was mainly based on the effects of World War II on Germany and its people. It also includes critiques of the types of ideological reasoning that supported the Nazi Regime.

Grass’ heritage also includes both German and Slavic family members who fought on opposing sides of the war. This reflects the ambiguity between ethnic groups. 

10. Günter Grass was the European of the year

Grass was awarded the European of the Year award by the European Movement Denmark. This was influenced by his recognition I  political discussions regarding European affairs. Grass thus joined the list of honorees, which includes Prince Henrik, former Danish Foreign Minister Uffe Ellemann-Jensen (V), and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
