The Niederwald monument has been a monument which is located in the Niederwald, near Rudesheim am Rhein in Hesse, Germany. It was  built between 1871 and 1883. 

The monument had  purposely built to commemorate the Unification of Germany. Niederwald monument has been located within the Rhine Gorge. The Monument is a larger UNESCO World Heritage Site. It overlooks the Rhine Valley and the town of Bingen on the far side.

1. A piece of Greece in Rheingau

It’s a complete artwork on the Rhine – Niederwald Monument, Rüdesheim. In the late summer of 1814, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe admired the “uniquely magnificent beauty of the Rheingau” from the monopteros in the Niederwald forest. At the time, the circular Greek temple stood in the middle of the landscape park created by Count von Ostein. 

Its  original building  which was destroyed in 1944.But it was rebuilt at the beginning of the 21st century, so visitors can enjoy the view across the Middle Rhine Valley from the monopteros again today. The area has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site  ever since 2002. This because  of  its unique combination of nature and culture considered particularly worthy of protection.

These include the Knights’ Hall, which, as a “forest balcony”, affords a magnificent view of the Loreley Valley and Assmannshausen, and the artificial Rossel ruin on the Niederwald Forest’s highest elevation. 

3. The Magic cave which  can be found in Niederwald Monument

The Magic Cave which might  walled passageway some 60 meters long it’s been dating back to 1790. And still bears witness to the romanticism that has  characterized the Count of Ostein’s landscape garden. 

The cave might have  Lined with glittering glass stones. That leads to the rotunda of the mirrored Magic Hut past a magician  that erected during the Count’s lifetime, to a narrow viewing aisle that opens out of the darkness to a view of the glorious Rhine.

4. Count Johann Friedrich Karl Maximilian von Ostein shaped the Niederwald Landscape Park 

In the second half of the 18th century, Count Johann Friedrich Karl Maximilian von Ostein who had  shaped the Niederwald Landscape Park. He used  a number of stone, and later wooden, buildings.

It had been designed in the English style. He wanted to use the site for hunting. But also its a  place of retreat, which was evidenced by the remains of a hermitage. The count which resulted to be  liked to invite guests here and welcomed to the Niederwald, amongst others, Brentano, Goethe and Beethoven. 

5. The Statue of Niederwald Monument which was  built to commemorate the unification of the German Empire after the Franco-Prussian War

The statue  was built between 1870 and 1880 . It had purposely been built to  commemorate the unification of the German Empire after the Franco-Prussian War. And the first stone had been  laid on 16 September 1871 by Kaiser Wilhelm I. 

The sculptor was Johannes Schilling, and the architect was Karl Weißbach. And the  total cost of the work has been  estimated at one million gold marks. The monument which  was inaugurated on 28 September 1883. Its  38 metres (125 ft) tall monument represents the union of all Germans.

6. Cable cars have been  used to get to Niederwald Monument

Visitors tend to take the cable cars which Carry 2 people per tram bucket up to the Niederwald Monument. 

 The view up the hill from the cable car which is amazing & beautiful the vineyards, towns & Rhine River. Niederwald well worth the trip. It just a short distance to the beautiful & impressive Niederwald Monument. Visitors really enjoy it & would definitely recommend it. It’s a great way to see a lot of the beautiful countryside and the historical monument.

7. The Niederwald has been a broad hill on the right bank of the Rhine

The Niederwald which is a broad hill on the right bank of the Rhine. It has been located next to the tributary Wisper, opposite Bingen am Rhein. The hill forms the southwestern apex of the Taunus range.

 Its summit which  has been  covered by a dense forest of oak and beech. The southern and western sides, which descend sharply to Rüdesheim am Rhein and Assmannshausen.  Niederwald  monument has been located at the edge of the forest, on the crest of the hill above Rüdesheim.

The Niederwald monument with its massive “iron lady” Germania which has been  known as the “Watch on the Rhine”. Its foundation stone which  was laid in 1877 in the presence of Kaiser Wilhelm I. and the Niederwald monument was inaugurated in 1883. The 38 metre high monument and the 10.5 metre high statue of Germania recall the founding of the new German Empire immediately after the Franco-German War.

This patriotic memorial which  has been a major tourist attraction ever since. It towers above the Rhine Valley which opens out beneath it and offers fascinating views from the Rheingau to the Middle Rhine Valley.

9. Explore the Niederwald Tempel 

A scenic cable car ride in Rüdesheim am Rhein ends at Niederwald tempel. It has been a historic structure dating back to 1788. The Tempel has been Located high above the town’s lush vineyards This small viewing temple offers splendid views of the region. 

Niederwald tempel  which was built as a part of Niederwald park. It has been  a beautiful landscape park that was once frequented by the likes of Beethoven and Goethe. After the original structure  which was completely destroyed in 1944. 

The tempel had been  rebuilt and opened to the public in 2006. Visitors can admire the beautiful view and capture stunning photos from this lookout, and couples can enjoy a romantic walk in the temple’s vicinity.

10. The Niederwalddenkmal which is a symbol of Germany

The Niederwalddenkmal lies in Hesse, Germany. This monument which has been  found in the Niederwald Landscape park. And it had ben designed by architect Karl Weisbach and created by sculptor Johannes Schilling. This magnificent monument cost one million marks to make at the time.
