10 Things to know about Coach Jürgen Klopp

A mile-long journey begins with a single step. This is what can be said about Liverpool FC under Jurgen Klopp’s leadership. Liverpool Football Club was an average club in the English Premier League, not one of the best. Since taking over as coach of the club, Jurgen Klopp has spent time renovating and building a squad that has proven to be a threat in the Premier League and other competitions. Liverpool has found itself again under Klopp. Klopp is the manager of the Premier League club Liverpool. He is a German professional football manager and former player. He is widely regarded as one of the world’s best managers. Since his appointment on October 8, 2015, he has brought glory to the club. This article will focus on some facts about Klopp that are unknown to most people. Let’s get started.

1. Klopp was a  FSV Mainz 05 Player

His playing career began – and ended – with FSV Mainz 05, where he spent his entire career before retiring at the age of 34.

As the man himself admitted, he was not the most talented player in the world, but he was able to compensate for his shortcomings through a keen understanding of the game.

This ability to apply his experience was evident in a positional switch from striker to center-half as his career progressed, resulting in over 300 professional appearances.

It was also the ideal preparation for a coaching career, which began in 2001 when he hung up his boots and moved straight into the dugout of a club where he had already served for 11 years.

2. He was appointed Mainz coach after Retirement

Following the dismissal of Eckhard Krautzun as manager of Mainz 05 in the 2. Bundesliga, Klopp was appointed as the club’s manager on 27 February 2001.

The next day, Klopp took charge of their first match, which Mainz 05 won 1-0 at home against MSV Duisburg. Klopp led Mainz to fourth place in the Bundesliga by employing his preferred pressing and counter-pressing tactics, narrowly missing promotion.

Mainz finished fourth again in 2002-03, denied promotion on the final day on goal difference. After two seasons of disappointment, Klopp led Mainz to a third-place finish in the 2003-04 season, securing the club’s first promotion to the Bundesliga.

3. Borrusia Dortmund Boss

Klopp was approached in May 2008 to become the new manager of Borussia Dortmund. Despite interest from German champions Bayern Munich, Klopp eventually agreed to a two-year contract with the club, which had finished 13th under previous manager Thomas Doll.

Klopp’s first game as manager was a 3-1 DFB-Pokal victory away to Rot-Weiss Essen on August 9. Klopp won his first trophy with the club in his first season, defeating German champions Bayern Munich to win the 2008 German Supercup.

In his first season as manager, he guided the club to a sixth-place finish. The following season, Klopp secured European football by leading Dortmund to a fifth-place finish despite having one of the league’s youngest squads.

4. Klopp once lost in six consecutive Finals

The unfavorable record began with the  Champions League final defeat to Bayern Munich in May 2013, and a year later, the same opponents defeated BVB 2-0 in the DFB Pokal final.

 Klopp’s final game in charge of Dortmund ended in a 3-1 defeat to VFB Wolfsburg in the Pokal.

Liverpool was in another final, this time on the continent, as they faced Sevilla in the 2016 Europa League final.
Two years later, in his first Champions League season with the club, Klopp led the Merseysiders to the final, but an early shoulder injury to star player Mo Salah set things in motion for the club.

5. He was exposed to sports at an early age

Jürgen Norbert Klopp was born in Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, to parents Norbert and Elisabeth. He grew up in Glatten, a Black Forest village, with his two older sisters, Stefanie Klopp and Isolde Reich.

Jurgen Klopp’s father was an active sportsman.  He subjected him to the rigors of physical conditioning and sports training as a child. Jurgen enjoyed playing tennis in the summer, skiing in the winter, and football all year.

6.  Jurgen has undergone a hair transplant

It is not uncommon for humans to experience receding hairlines as they age, and while some choose to ignore the effects of nature, others are not so content and go out of their way to correct this.

Throughout history, numerous famous and ordinary people have undergone hair procedures, and Jurgen Klopp is one of them.

He is open about it, however, and proudly tells journalists that he had a hair transplant, even pointing out that it looks good on him.

Jurgen Klopp is one of the world’s most recognizable managers. His charismatic personality and infectious smile endear him to fans of rival clubs alike.

His four-year transformation of Liverpool from Premier League outsiders to European champions and genuine title contenders has been revolutionary, to say the least.

Jurgen Klopp is widely regarded as one of the best managers of his generation, and he helped popularize the football term gegenpressing football tactic, in which his teams try to win the ball immediately after losing it rather than fall back to defend.

8.  He has been married twice and has a son and a step-son

Jurgen Klopp married his first wife Sabine in the 1980s.  They have a son named Marc, who was born in 1988 and has played amateur football at a number of football clubs throughout Germany with limited success.

Jurgen and Sabine divorced in 2001, and Klopp married Ulla Sandrock in 2005, whom he met at a pub during the same Oktoberfest celebration. Ulla Sandrock is a children’s author and social worker. Dennis, her son from a previous marriage, is her only child.

9.  He has had numerous books written about him and his tactical methods 

Given his celebrity, it’s no surprise that numerous books have been written about Jurgen Klopp. Whose boisterous sense of humor and charming personality make him a thrill at press conferences and provide an abundance of one-line catchphrases to latch onto.

10. He has a diploma in Sports science

Klopp earned a sports diploma from Goethe University in Frankfurt while playing for Mainz. Many people assumed his thesis would be about football, but he wrote it about racewalking.

Racewalking is a sport and a discipline of athletics. It is a long-distance foot race in which, unlike running, one foot must remain in contact with the ground at all times. The race distance can range between 3000 meters and 100 kilometers.

While Klopp may know everything there is to know about walking, he will not have to do it alone as long as he is at Anfield.
