Victor was born in Le Chesnay, France on 4 January 2004. His father, Felix Wembanyama, is of the Democratic Republic of the Congo descent and his mother, Elodie de Fautereau, is a basketball coach and former player. He has two siblings, Eve and Oscar.

Victor is not the only Wembanyama member who plays sports. Eve, Victor’s elder sister, plays basketball as well and represented France to win gold at the 2017 FIBA U16 European Championships. Oscar, his younger brother, used to play handball and is now progressing through the basketball tiers.
His father, Félix, was a track and field athlete who participated in the triple jump, long jump, and high jump. His mother, Elodie de Fautereau, is a former player and basketball coach. Wembanyama’s father is 1.98 metres (6 ft 6 in) and his mother stands at 1.91 metres (6 ft 3 in). Both his grandmother Marie Christine and his grandfather Michel de Fautereau were professional basketball players.

3. He played football and practised Judo before venturing into basketball
Before concentrating on basketball, Wembanyama trained in judo and played goalkeeping in football. His mother, a youth team coach, taught him how to play basketball. Wembanyama started playing with Entente Le Chesnay Âé¶¹APP at the age of seven, and at age 10 he transferred to Nanterre 92’s youth program. Wembanyama’s first professional experience came in the 2019–20 campaign while appearing sparingly in two games for the Nanterre 92 senior squad coached by Pascal Donnadieu.

5. Wembanyama turned down a career at Barcelona
Wembanyama led his club to third place in the Minicopa del Rey, under-14 competitions in Spain, in February 2018 while on loan to FC Barcelona. Being a 2.10-meter big guy at the time, he showed some of his potentials. He turned down an option to continue his career with Barcelona because he felt the coaches would not push him and would not call him out for any malfeasance. Instead, he chose to go back to France and continue his growth there.
6. He represented France at the 2019 FIBA U16 European Championship
In Udine, Italy, for the 2019 FIBA U16 European Championship, Wembanyama represented France. Wembanyama led France to a silver medal and was named to the all-tournament team with an average of nine points, 9.6 rebounds, and a tournament-high 5.3 blocks per game. In Latvia in 2021, he took part in the FIBA Under-19 Basketball World Cup.
Wembanyama was selected to the all-tournament team after helping France to the silver medal with an average of 14 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 5.7 blocks per game. In the final, an 83-81 defeat to the United States, he finished with 22 points, 8 rebounds, and 8 blocks. Wembanyama set the FIBA record for most blocks made in a single tournament.
7. He made his EuroLeague debut in 2021
Wembanyama committed to a three-year deal with ASVEL of the Pro A and the EuroLeague on June 29, 2021. At the beginning of the season, he missed a month of action due to illness. Wembanyama made his EuroLeague debut on October 1 against Algiris in an 88-76 victory, earning one block in three minutes.
He was second in the vote for the EuroLeague Rising Star award behind Rokas Jokubaitis, averaging 6.5 points and 3.8 rebounds per game in the competition. Despite Tony Parker, the club president, promising to develop the squad around him the next year, he decided to break his contract with ASVEL after the season.

Wembanyama agreed to a two-year deal with Metropolitans 92 of the LNB Pro A on July 4, 2022. He joined the squad because of the head coach Vincent Collet’s reputation for nurturing and giving young players opportunities. Following two preseason games in Las Vegas versus the NBA G League Ignite, which included potential second-round selection Scoot Henderson, Wembanyama received attention from the American media in October 2022.
