Top 10 Things to do in Évreux

Evreux is not as popular as other French cities. This small town is beautiful and has slowly become a favorite tourist destination and is worth a visit. It is also a religious and administrative capital of the Eure, it is known for its historic, architectural and artistic heritage.

The renovation done in the town center has improved its old Gallo-Roman ramparts, former diocese and the cathedral and the paths by the river for walks.

Every June, the town hosts a Rock music festival Rock. This hidden destination has surprisingly beautiful, fun and unique activities to do and places to discover.

Here are some top things to do in Evreux.

1. A tour of Évreux Cathedral

Évreux Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of Our Lady of Évreux or Cathédrale Notre-Dame d’Évreux. It is located in the Normandy region in France and is now a national monument.

Built in the 10th century, the central part of the church has retained the semi-circular arcades from the Romanesque period.

The west façade of the cathedral towers dates back to the late 16th century.  The north tower is the bell tower. The foundation of the church was laid in 1392 and was finished in 1417.

A notable highlight of the cathedral includes the 16th-century entrance on the western side of the cathedral and the stained-glass windows.

2. Bishop’s Palace

The palace dates back to the 15th century and is adjacent to the Evreux Cathedral and has the Gothic architecture.

Inside the Bishop’s Palace is a history and art museum that showcases amazing collections of notable abstract artworks.

The exterior of the palace has magnificent details worth a look such as the turrets, mullion glass-windows, highly wrought moldings above the doorways and beautiful roof windows.

3. Church of Saint-Taurin

This is another religious Henge in Evreux. The church has a vast array of architectural styles and periods of construction similar to the Cathedral.

What stands out is the decorative 12th century entrance that is among the oldest parts of the Saint Taurin church. Other notable features inside the church are the significant medieval baptism basins and the stained-glass.

While touring this church, your eyes will catch the intricate details of a model Gothic church almost a meter long and lavishly decorated with silver, which is a shrine containing the relics of Saint-Taurin.

4. Museum of Art, History and Archaeology

The museum of art, history and archaeology in Evreux, is a cultural establishment that is managed by the urban area Évreux Portes de Normandie since 2018.

The museum was established in 1961 in the old Episcopal Palace, which was built around the 16th century on the grounds of the Lower Roman Empire by Raoul du Fou.

It exhibits a variety of collections that will catch your eye. One artifact that stands out is the famous bronze statues of Jupiter and Apollo.

A tour of the basement will unveil a 4th century Gallo-Roman rampart that is part of the historic monument. The museum has a fine collection documenting the history of the diocese (some medieval and Renaissance sculpture and silverware).

5. The Clock Tower at Evreux

You cannot miss this elaborate fortified clock tower built in Gothic style by architect Pierre Moteau. Before 1396, the tower served as a watchtower for the community in Evreux, where they had put a bell  to sound the alarm.

The clock was made by an unknown craftsman from Mantes and begun working 1412. Later in 1481citizens of Evreux opted to rebuild the fort holding the clock, therefore the bell and the clock were transferred to the Saint-Pierre church.

It was later restored in 1847 after the renovation was complete.

The tower is 44 meters long and has 140 steps that has been altered on several occasions in the 19th century. One amazing fact about this belfry is that it was ruined during the Second World War.

6. Go for an adventure at the

This is a perfect spot a group activity whether you are with friends or family. The course located in a magnificent forest area at the Domaine du Château de Trangis, 5 minutes from the Evreux city center.

There are 7 courses with more than 80 games, plenty of fun for everyone. There are playgrounds for children and for picnics in the park too.

If you fancy a mini-golf game or an outdoor laser game, this is the place to be while in Evreux. If you happen to be there for your bachelor party, there are sumo fights curated for such parties.

7. Attend the Le Manège de Tilly in Evreux

Sample Evreux nightlife by attending one of this fascinating concert and shows held at Le Manège de Tilly. It is located at r 7th Hunter, 27000 Évreux.

They have themed concerts that showcase culture and traditions, e.g. Hispanic flamenco. Whilst enjoying the show, you will also be able to sample some delicious cuisine.

They do have traditional dances, horse shows, music, cabarets among others.

8. Place du Général-de-Gaulle

The general Du Gaulle square is on the site of the old castle. Before her death in 1876,  entrusted the city to erect a monumental fountain with gushing water on one of the main squares of the City of Évreux.

It was then built in 1882 by architect Charles Genuys and the Ebroïc sculptor Louis-Émile Décorchemont.

Right opposite the town hall is the fountain that represents the River Eure. This has been symbolized by a young lady wearing the coat of arms of Evreux. The two children are the River’s tributaries; the Iton and the Rouloir.

9. Take a walk along the Iton

The Iton river is perfect for hikes close by is a Château. The river has always been a permanent history in the city.

In Roman times the walls were constructed along the course of the Iton. It was later turned to a for waterfront industries where it supplied water to dyers, tanners and powering mills.

There are “public wash houses” along the river that were owned by the rich. I medieval times, the rich were allowed to construct wash houses along the river for laundry where people paid to use the facility. There are still testaments of these that you will see on your walk.

10. Visit the Gallo-Roman site at Evreux

This archaeological site of Gisacum, is a few kilometers from Evreux city center. It is an exciting place to explore and learn the history of an important Gallo-Roman temple town. While at this site, you will be able to visit the ancient baths that is set in an archaeological garden.

It was founded in the early first century then abandoned in the second half of the third century.  Over 2000 years ago, this used to extend over 250 hectares of land and had a huge number of public buildings such as a temple, baths, and a theater.

This archaeological site of Gisacum is still being excavated and is open for public tours.
