Catherine Fabienne Dorleac professionally known as Catherine Deneuve was born on22nd October 1943 in Âé¶¹APP, France.

She is a French actress noted for her classic flavoring beauty, as well as for her roles in films by some of the world’s greatest directors. She is also an irregular singer, model, and producer considered one of the greatest European actresses.

Deneuve speaks fluent Italian and English and has some knowledge of Spanish though she’s not fluent. She is a 14-time Cesar Award nominee she won for her performances in Truffault’s film The Last Metro in 1980.

She began her film career seriously in 1960 with her praised performance in the romantic classic Les Parapluies de Cherbourg’s “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg” by Jacques Demy.

1. Deneuve used her mother’s maiden name for her stage name

Catherine Deneuve’s original name was Catherine Dorleac. She was born to French stage actors Maurice Dorleac and her mother Renee Deneuve Simonot.

Her younger sister Sylvie Dorleac, as well as their maternal half-sister, Dielle who later adopted their father’s name were occasional actresses.

Deneuve adopted her mother’s name Deneuve which she chose for her stage name to differentiate herself from her sisters.

2. She rose to an international star in Jacques Demy’s film

Deneuve began acting in 1957 with a small role in AndreHunebelle’s Les Collegiennes film with her younger sister Sylvie Dorleac.

She began her film career in 1960, appearing in several films for director Roger Vadim. She appeared in Les Petits Chats’ “The Little Chats”.

This caught the eye of Jacques Demy who cast her in his romantic musical film Les Paraplues de Cherbourg in 1964, which brought her to stardom.

She appeared with apparent delight, in films packed with passion, often with some pretty kinky sex, like Belle de Jour, and the 1965 horror film Repulsion directed by Roman Polanski.

During the 1960s and 1970s, she got in great demand by several world-leading directors after her cast in Jacques Demy’s romantic film Les Parapluies de Cherbourg, which brought her to stardom.

She was in Roman Polanski’s horror classic Repulsion, reinforcing it in Luis Bunuel’s film Belle de Jour which she is best known.

She reached her top in Tristana, a drama film also by Bunuel. Deneuve was also featured in Terence Young’s film Mayerling.

Despite her international resume, most of Deneuve’s films were made in France. Most of her best-ranked movies like Repulsion (1965), Tristana(1970), and A Matter of Resistance (1966).

She made her film debut in Les Collégiennes as Une grande,’in 1957, as a teenager.

Belle de Jour (1967), Mississippi Mermaid (1969), The Last Metro(1980), Belle Maman (1999), and Indochine(1992), which also earned her first Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. 

6. She is a human rights defender

Deneuve has been involved with the Amnesty International program to abolish the death penalty and signed the Manifesto of the 343 in 1971.

She delivered a petition organized by the French-based group, “Together Against the death penalty”, to the U.S. Embassy in Âé¶¹APP in 2001. 

She also signed a petition among other French celebrities asking the future President of France to propose a vote at the United Nations General Assembly to allow homosexuality worldwide in 2011.

Deneuve won 2-Cesar Awards both in 1981 for the film Le Dernier Metro and in 1993 for the film Indochine.

She won NYFCC Award for Best Actress in Repulsion, EFA Award for Best Actress in 8 Women, Globes de Crystal Award, and Satellite Award for Best Actress in A Christmas Tale among others.

In 2000, a Golden Palm Star on the Palm Springs California, Walk of Stars was dedicated to her and she was honored for her lifetime achievement at the 26th European Film Awards in 2013.

She received the Lifetime Achievement Golden Orange Award from International Antalya Film Festival Turkey and in 2020, The New York Times ranked her number 21 in its list of the 25 Greatest Actors of the 21st Century.

8. Deneuve published her diary in 2005

In 2005, she published her diary A L’ombre de Moi-meme “In My Own Shadow” which was published in English as portrait and personal; The Private Diaries of Catherine Deneuve.

In the diary, she wrote about her experiences shooting the films Indochine a 1992 drama film, and Dancer in the Dark, a 2002 musical drama film.

In 1963 and 1965, she appeared in two playboy pictorials, and also her image was used to portray Marianne, the national symbol of France from 1985 to 1989.

As the face of Chanel No.5, the first perfume launched by French couturier Gabrielle”Coco” Chanel in 1921, she caused sales of the perfume to sour in the United States.

Her charm captured the American press and nominated her as the world’s most elegant woman in the 1970s. In 1983 American Home Products maintained her to represent their cosmetics line.

She became a model for designer Yves Saint Laurent’s skincare line in 1992and in 2001 she was chosen as the new face of L’Oreal Âé¶¹APP.

10. Deneuve has not had public relationships since her break up in 1991

She has been married once to photographer David Bailey from 1965 to 1972, though they separated in 1967.

She after-dated director Roger Vadim with whom had a son, actor Marcello Mastroianni with whom had a daughter, cinematographer Hugh Johnson and Canal tycoon Pierre Lescure. She has not had a public relationship since her break-up with Lescure.
