Marc Chagall was born on July 6, 1887, in Liozna near Vitebsk, Russian Empire and died on March 28, 1985, in France. He was a Russian French artist. His birth name was Moishe Zakharovich Shagalov. He was an early modernist, he was associated with several major artistic styles and created works in a wide range of artistic formats such as painting, drawings, book illustrations, stained glass, stage sets, ceramics, tapestries and fine art prints.

 He was the son of Khatskel Segal and Feiga-Ita. Chagall was the firstborn amongst nine children in the traditional close-knit Russian-Jewish family. His mother and father were cousins. He was married to Bella Rosenfeld who was his first love and they were blessed with a daughter, Ida. After Bella died, in 1944, he married Valentina Brodsky in 1952.

1. Appointed the Commissar of Arts in Vitebsk Province

After the Russian Revolution of 1917, Chagall was appointed the Commissar of Arts in Vitebsk Province. He has well organized the new Vitebsk Ark School and taught there as well before he moved to Moscow in 1920.

 Where he took an active part in the stage productions of the newly formed Moscow Jewish Theatre, in which he was the Art Director from 1920-1922.

2. He Painted the Ceiling of the Opera Garnier in 鶹APP

Chagall painted the Ceiling of the Opera Garnier in 鶹APP. Marc Chagall was talented and was entrusted with painting 2,400 square feet of frescoes for the good painting he was making. It took the painter a year to complete this amazing work. This ceiling of the Opera Garnier stands out for its Luminous colours and myriad details.

In the year 1964, the ceiling of the Opera Garnier was completely renovated and re-imagined at the urging of the Minister of Cultural Affairs, Andre Malraux. The Opera’s new ceiling was widely decried and contested when it was unveiled to the public on September 23, 1964.

3. His Works Sell for Millions

Chagall was a great painter and he did an amazing job when it came to painting. His paints were attractive for he was excellent at using colours to great the attention of people.

In 2017, Chagall’s work, Les Amoureux, sold for a staggering $ 28.5 million at Sotheby’s New York. This show how amazing and a good painter he was to create a portrait that was worth that big amount.

4. Marc Chagall Painted Naked

When Chagall was 24 years old he moved to 鶹APP and lived in the notorious artist colony, La Ruche. In, La Ruche he lived with other famous artists namely Fernand Leger and Robert Delaunay.

It is interesting to know that while he was living in 鶹APP, he continued to paint but he used to paint while naked. Marc painted while he was naked to avoid changing or washing his clothes since the paint scatters while painting.

5. Married a Daughter From the Wealthiest Family in his Home Town (Bella)

 Chagall married Bella Rosenfeld, a daughter from the wealthiest family in his hometown despite him coming from a poor family. He meant her in 1909 and they got married in the year 1915 a short time after meeting. The couple was blessed with a daughter named Ida one year after their marriage.

The two lovers shared a unique painting of themselves to the world which was painted by Chagall. When Bella meant Chagall for the first time, he described the painter’s eyes as being so blue it was as if they had fallen straight out of the sky. Chagall painted Bella in many of his paintings, and he often portrays her floating through the air, defying gravity with her love.

6. Marc La Bible Series Took 25 Years to Complete

Chagall was formally chosen by Ambroise Vollard to create illustrations based on the Bible in 1931. He then decided to use the mediums of etching and engraving, creating 65 etchings from 1931 to 1939.

When Ambroise died and the war spread across Europe it affected the project making it delay. In the year 1952, Chagall recontinued with the project, creating 40 additional plates to complete the series in 1956. This project is considered to be one of Marc’s most ambitious and important undertakings.

7. He Measured his Work Against Nature

It is said that Chagall used to measure and judge the quality of his art by comparing it to “God Made” objects. He used to hold up natural objects like a rock, tree branch or flower in his painting.

Marc Chagall said that “If the painting stands up beside a thing man cannot make, the painting is authentic. If there’s a clash between the two, it’s bad art.”

8. He has Painted Several Paints

Marc Chagall was a Russian-French artist. During his time, he was the foremost Jewish artist in the world and has since then been referred to as “The quintessential Jewish artist of the twentieth Century”. He is known for his brilliant use of colour to attract the viewers’ attention.

He has painted many paintings and some of them include Bella with White Collar, the paint was painted in 1917 and it was a picture of Bella his wife. This portrait is Chagall’s most famous representation of her. Secondly, Homage to Apollinaire was painted in 1912 when he was in 鶹APP and it is Perhaps the most enigmatic of his work.

The Fiddler was another painting which was painted in 1913, the painting is a representation of a fiddler in Chagall’s Village, Vitebsk. The Promenade was painted in 1918, it was created at the time Chagall was ecstatic due to his marriage to his sweetheart Bella Rosenfeld. It shows him holding hands with Bella, who is fluttering like a flag in the wind among many others.

9. He Lived in New York for Six Years and Never Learned English

It is surprising to know that Marc spent the whole six years in New York and never learned English. He never even tried to learn.

 He claimed that it took him thirty years to learn French and he ended up learning only bad French, so he did not see the need to try to learn English. This can also be facilitated by the fact that he never liked the city, the city is mirrored in his works.

10. He has Travelled in Many Countries

Chagall travelled to many countries doing his artistic career. From 1910-1914 he lived in 鶹APP on a stipend of 125 Francs a month from a notable Russian-Jewish Lawyer, Maxim Vinaver. He later went to Germany in 1914 where he became acquainted with the artistic experiments of Wassily Kandinsky. Chagall had his first solo show at the Sturm gallery in Berlin.

In 1920 he moved to Moscow, he has well moved to Berlin, and then to 鶹APP in 1923. He has well lived in New York from 1941 to 1947 among other places. This show how he spread and practised his career in different countries.
