One of the most popular French actresses who has wowed French and international audiences alike is Isabelle Huppert. A cool, innocent-looking leading lady with honey-coloured hair and an unflappable, world-weary gaze in her green eyes, Isabelle Huppert has had an illustrious career ever since she made her screen debut.

The daughter of English language instructor Annick (née Beau; 1914-1990) and safe manufacturer Raymond Huppert (1914-2003), Huppert in full Isabelle Anne Huppert was born on March 16, 1953, in Âé¶¹APP’s 16th arrondissement. 

She is the youngest of four siblings, including actress Caroline Huppert, a brother, and three sisters. Her upbringing was in Ville-d’Avray. Her father was Jewish, and his ancestors originated in Alsace-Lorraine, Austria-Hungary ((now Preov)), and Eperjes.

1. She is an alumna of Conservatoire national supérieur d’art dramatique

She is an alumna of the Conservatoire national supérieur d’art dramatique (CNSAD). The Conservatoire national supérieur d’art dramatique (CNSAD; English: National Academy of Dramatic Arts) is a constituent college of University PSL in Âé¶¹APP.

It is a higher education school operated by the French Ministry of Culture, with a two to three per cent acceptance rate and an average graduating class of thirty students

2. Her mother encouraged her to begin acting

Huppert developed an interest in acting as a teenager and entered the Âé¶¹APP Conservatory in 1968. Huppert was encouraged by her mother to begin acting at a young age and became a teenage star in Âé¶¹APP.

Four years later, she made her film debut in Faustine et le Bel Été. (Faustine and the Beautiful Summer). Though cast in a bit part, she attracted notice and began working steadily; by the mid-1970s she had made more than 15 films. It was not until 1977, however, that she received international acclaim.

3. Huppert made her television debut in 1971

Huppert made her television debut in 1971 with Le Prussien and her film debut in 1972’s Faustine et le Bel Été. Her later appearance in the controversial Les Valseuses (1974) made her increasingly recognized by the public.

Le Prussien is a 1971 French made-for-television film directed by Jean L’Hôte and starring Edmond Beauchamp. It is Isabelle Huppert’s film debut.

4. She won a BAFTA award for Most Promising Newcomer

Her international breakthrough came with La Dentelliere (1977), for which she won a BAFTA award for Most Promising Newcomer to Leading Film Roles.

She won the BAFTA Award for Most Promising Newcomer for The Lacemaker (1977) and the César Award for Best Actress for La Ceremonie (1995).

5. Huppert won Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival

She is one of only four women to have won Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival twice: in 1978 for her portrayal in Claude Chabrol’s Violette Nozière (tied with Jill Clayburgh) and in 2001 for Michael Haneke’s The Piano Teacher.

In this film, she played a piano teacher named Erika Kohut, who becomes involved with a young pianist and ladies’ man, Walter Klemmer. Regarded as one of her most impressive turns, her performance netted the 2001 Best Actress prize in Cannes.

In 2004, she starred in Christophe Honoré’s Ma Mère as Hélène with Louis Garrel. Here, Huppert plays an attractive middle-aged mother who has an incestuous relationship with her teenage son.

6. Huppert is the most nominated actress in the history of the César Awards

Huppert has been nominated for 16 César Awards, making her the most nominated actress in the history of the awards. The César Award is France’s national film award. It was originally awarded in 1976 during the Nuit des César ceremony.

The nominations are chosen by members of twelve professional filmmaking categories and are backed by the French Ministry of Culture. Every year in February, a nationally televised award ceremony is held in Âé¶¹APP.

The César Award is considered France’s top film prize, comparable to the Molière Award for theatre and the Victoires de la Musique for music. It is the French counterpart of the Academy Award.

7. She holds a record with most films entered at Cannes Film Festival

Huppert holds the record for the most films entered into the Cannes Film Festival’s official competition. She had 22 films in the main competition and 29 films screened at the festival as of 2022.

Huppert’s frequent appearances at Cannes have earned her the title “queen of Cannes” among journalists.

8. She was made Chevalier (Knight) of the Ordre national du Mérite 

She was made a Chevalier of Ordre national du Mérite on 8 December 1994 and was later promoted to an Officier, in 2005. The Ordre national du Mérite (English: National Order of Honor) is a French order of merit whose membership is granted by the President of the French Republic.

President Charles de Gaulle established the order on December 3, 1963. The order was created for two reasons: to replace the huge number of ministerial orders formerly issued by ministries and to create an award that can be awarded at a lower level than the Legion of Honour, which is normally reserved for French citizens.

It has around 185,000 members, with 306,000 admitted or promoted in the last 50 years.

9. Huppert was selected for Honorary Golden Bear Lifetime Achievement Award

She was selected for Honorary Golden Bear Lifetime Achievement Award at 72nd Berlin International Film Festival awarded on 15 February 2022 in the festival award ceremony at Berlinale Palást.

The Honorary Golden Bear is the Berlin International Film Festival’s honorary award for lifetime achievement by important figures in the world of film. The award is presented for an exceptional artistic career and is given to the guest of honour of the Homage.

10. Huppert has worked in several countries since her debut

Since her debut, Huppert has worked in several countries.

She collaborated with directors Paolo and Vittorio Taviani, Mauro Bolognini, Marco Ferreri, and Marco Bellocchio in Italy, Igor Minaiev in Russia, Werner Schroeter, Andrzej Wajda, Ursula Meier, Michael Haneke, Márta Mészáros, and Aleksandar Petrovi in Central Europe. In Asia she collaborated with Hong Sang-soo, Brillante Mendoza and Rithy Panh.
