The Rothschilds are a rich Ashkenazi Jewish family from Frankfurt who rose to prominence in the 1760s with Mayer Amschel Rothschild (1744-1812), a court factor to the German Landgraves of Hesse-Kassel in the Free City of Frankfurt, Holy Roman Empire, who launched his banking firm.
Unlike most prior court figures, Rothschild was able to leave his fortune to his five sons, who started enterprises in London, Âé¶¹APP, Frankfurt, Vienna, and Naples. The family rose to noble status in both the Holy Roman Empire and the United Kingdom.
The family’s historical history begins in 16th century Frankfurt, and its name is taken from the family residence, Rothschild, which was established in 1567 in Frankfurt by Isaak Elchanan Bacharach. One such renowned Rothschild is Edmond James de Rothschild.
A member of the French branch of the Rothschild banking dynasty, he was born Baron Abraham Edmond Benjamin James de Rothschild on 19 August 1845 in the Âé¶¹APP suburb of Boulogne-Billancourt, Hauts-de-Seine, the youngest child of James Mayer Rothschild and Betty von Rothschild.

The Franco-Prussian War or Franco-German War, often known as the War of 1870 in France, was a struggle between the Second French Empire and the North German Confederation commanded by the Kingdom of Prussia.
The battle, which lasted from 19 July 1870 to 28 January 1871, was principally motivated by France’s intention to reestablish its dominance in continental Europe, which had been called into question following the decisive Prussian victory over Austria in 1866.
2. Edmond joined the Âé¶¹APP House in 1868
In 1868, Edmond joined the Âé¶¹APP House and became a director of the Est railway company and other family businesses. He travelled to Bukharu to investigate the potential of the area’s oilfields.
3. He became a leading proponent of the Zionist movement

Edmond bequeathed an enormous collection of drawings and engravings to the Louvre, containing over 40,000 engravings (including over 100 engravings and drawings by Rembrandt), approximately 3,000 drawings, and 500 illustrated books.
A portion of his art collection was left to his son James and is now part of the Waddesdon Manor collection.

His remains and those of his wife Adelheid were interred at Ramat Hanadiv in Zikhron Ya’akov in 1954. Following Edmond’s death, his son James de Rothschild (1878-1957) supervised PICA’s affairs.
9. Rothschild Boulevard in Tel Aviv is named after Edmond James
Rothschild Boulevard in Tel Aviv is named after him, as are several towns and villages throughout Israel that he helped to establish. Rishon LeZion, the city he helped create, called one of its main streets Rothschild Street, and Rothschild Mall was completed in 1996.
The Parc Edmond de Rothschild (Edmond de Rothschild Park) in Boulogne-Billancourt is also named after him.
10. Baron Edmond was commemorated as “HaNadiv HaYadu’a”
Baron Edmond was renowned as “HaNadiv HaYadu’a” (Hebrew for “The Known Benefactor” or “The Famous Benefactor”) for his Jewish charity, and his son bequeathed the funds to build the Knesset building in his memory.
The 1982/5742 Independence Day coin is dedicated to Edmond de Rothschild and commemorates the centennial of his initial ventures in Israel. From 1982 to 1986, his face appeared on the 500 Israeli sheqel note issued by the Bank of Israel.
