Top 10 Facts about the Reign of Clovis 481 – 511


 

Clovis was a very popular ruler who was the first king of the Franks and also the first to unite the Frankish tribes under one ruler. He was the son of Childeric who he succeeded as the king of Salian Franks in 481 where he ruled an extended area from the current southern Netherlands to northern France.

He also managed to change the leadership style which involved several group kings into a single king and also ensure the kingship was passed to his heirs. He is also believed to be the founder of the Merovingian dynasty which ruled Frankish for the next two centuries. Before his death, Clovis had also conquered some small Frankish kingdoms which included some northern parts which are current France.

He also conquered other kingdoms in the southwest part including the Visigothic kingdom of Aquitania. All the campaigns were very significant for Clovis’s domains that helped him build his dynasty as the major military and political presence in Western Europe. Just before his death, he managed to divide his kingdom among his four sons which followed the Salian Tradition.

1. Clovis Converted to Catholicism

One of the reasons why Clovis was very popular among the people during the early centuries was his conversion to Catholicism in 496. His conversion was a result of frequent persuasions from his lovely wife, Clotilde.

Clotilde was later venerated as a saint who is still celebrated currently in both Roman Catholic Church and Eastern Orthodox Church. He was later baptized in 508 on Christmas Day which led to widespread conversion among the Frankish people.

2. Clovis Succeeded his Father and Began to Expand his Kingdom

Clovis succeeded his father, Childeric 1 who was a Frankish leader, and after his death in 481 while he was the age of sixteen. His entire band of warriors had a total of not more than half a thousand.

Five years later after his succession, he began to expand his kingdom by allying himself with his relatives including Ragnachar and the regulus of Cambrai. He was also betrayed by Chalaric who refused to join the fight but later Clovis invaded his territory and imprisoned Chalaric and his son.

3. He Married a Catholic Wife to Receive the Help from the Clergy

As a result of his desire to rule over the Gaul, Clovis decided to marry a catholic wife so that he would get the help that he needed. After marrying the catholic wife, he also went on and incorporated Syagrius’s units into his army.

Through the help of the clergy, he also managed to put the Roman kingdom under his control by 491. In the same year, he also successfully moved against the Thuringians which is in eastern Gaul.

4. Clovis Secured his Reign Through Marriage Alliances

Clovis was able to maintain his reign as the king for a long period through marriages that formed alliances. He began by marrying a catholic wife to receive support from the clergy. He also allied with the king of Ostrogoths after the king married his sister, Audofleda around 493 AD. His uncle also allied with him by marrying his exiled niece to the Frankish king.

5. Clovis Narrowly Defeated the Alamanni  in the Battle of Tolbaic

Clovis suffered a great loss after he was invaded by the Alamanni in 496. Clovis met with his enemies near the strong fort of Tolbaic and during the war; he almost converted to Christianity around that time.

He was only able to narrowly defeat the Alamanni during the battle after receiving the help of the Ripuarian. After the battle, he confined his prisoners and Chalaric together with his son to a monastery.

6. Clovis had Chararic Murdered for Planning to Escape the Prison

After Clovis captured Chararic, he planned to escape from the monastic prison and Clovis had him murdered. In the same year, he also convinced Chlodoric who was a prince to murder his father so that he could attain his nickname as Chlodoric the Parricide. However after Chlodoric had murdered his father, Clovis betrayed him and had his envoys strike him down.

7. He Captured and Executed Ragnachar and his Brother

Ragnachar was a friend to Clovis but after his conversion to Christianity, many pagans defected to Ragnachar. Clovis decided to visit him but he denied him entry which caused him to make a move against Ragnachar.

He bribed Ragnachar’s retainers and he was able to capture and execute both Ragnachar together with his brother.

8. He was Persuaded by his Wife to Convert to Catholicism

Clovis was born a pagan but later he was persuaded by his wife to convert to Catholicism. At first, he revisited after his first son was baptized and died immediately which gave him more reasons not to convert. His second son became very ill almost to death after the baptism which his wife carried secretly. He later converted after the Battle of Tolbiac on Christmas Day.

9. His Kingdom was Partitioned among his Four Sons

After the death of Clovis on 27th November 511, his entire kingdom was partitioned among his four sons. His sons were named Chlodomer, Clotaire, Childebert and Theuderic. The partition however led to the creation of new political units of the kingdoms of Orleans, Rheims, Soissons, and Âé¶¹APP. It also led to the inauguration of the tradition which caused disunity that lasted up to the end of the Merovingian dynasty in 751.

10. His Conversion to Roman Catholic set him Apart from other Germanic Kings

It is said that what set Clovis apart from all other Germanic kings was his conversion from Christianity to Roman Catholicism. It helped him a lot as he fought to distinguish himself from the many power centers in Western Europe. His conversion also set him above the Vandals and Visigoths who had converted from Germanic paganism to Arian Christianity.

Clovis was a very prominent ruler among the Frankish who won many battles conquering various kingdoms that enabled him to establish his huge kingdom. He also converted to Roman Catholicism which played a very big role in his rule as he received a lot of support. His conversion was however a result of continuous persuasion from his wife, Clotilde.
