1. Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s early upbringing was in Morocco

This French politician was born in Morocco’s Tangier area on 19 August 1951. His father’s name was Georges and he worked as a postmaster while his mother’s name was Jeanine Bayona and she was a schoolteacher by profession.

Additionally, his parents were of Spanish descent with his mother having mixed ethnicity of Spanish and Sicilian heritages. His early childhood years were spent in Morocco until 1962 when their family relocated to France.

2. Jean-Luc Mélenchon is a philosophy major

He pursued his high school education at Lycée Pierre-Corneille in Rouen. He then progressed to the University of Franche-Comté where he graduated with a degree in philosophy studies.

3. He once practiced teaching

Besides his philosophy degree, he enrolled in the France secondary school professional teaching qualification. It is called CAPES (Certificate of Aptitude for secondary school teachers). Thus he was eligible to teach in schools and taught before he entered the political arena.

4. Mélenchon’s first political role came in 1983

In 1983, he started with the elected position of municipal councilor of Massy. In 1985 he advanced to the duty of Essonne’s general councilor. Furthermore, he was elected as the Senator of Essonne. He assumed office in October 1986 and served until April 2000. Afterward, from 2000 to 2002, he served as the Minister delegate for Vocational Education.

To add on, in 2004 he was elected into the Senate representing Essonne and remained in the position until 2010. Around 2009, he joined the European Parliament where he was a member up to 2017.

Over and above that, in June 2017 he became a member of the National Assembly where he served up to 2022. In his time at the National Assembly, he was the leader of the LFI (La France Insoumise) group. He led this parliamentary group immediately after he joined the National Assembly in 2017 until October 2021.

5. He has vied for presidential office three times unsuccessfully

Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s first attempt into the presidential race was in 2012 but the winner was François Hollande. In 2017 he made his second trial but Emmanuel Macron emerged as the winner. In both times, he came in at fourth place with less than 20% of the first-round vote.

What’s more, in the 2022 presidential election, he tried his luck and missed progressing to the second round by a narrow margin. The two-round voting system in France saw Macron defend his seat during the 2022 presidential election.

6. Mélenchon has been an affiliate of about five political parties

He began as a member of the Internationalist Communist Organisation which he joined in 1972 and left in 1976. In 1976 he shifted camp to the Socialist Party which earned him his first elected task in France politics. He also managed to secure key positions such as a Senate seat during his stay in this party. He was a member until 2008.

From 2009, he belonged to the Left Party and thus was part of the Left Front coalition where his party was a member. In 2016, he moved from the Left Party to La France Insoumise where he has remained since then.

7. He is the founder of the La France Insoumise group

The far-left French politician is credited for starting the La France Insoumise group in February 2016. In the 2017 presidential election, he led the party into a significant performance for the head of the state seat. He steers the alliance to push for socialist agendas and policies.
