The good thing about love is that it is ever-changing. At one point we get hurt so bad that we vow never to love again, but somehow love sneaks back into our lives. When in sneaks back again it usually more meaningful than the previous experience.

Blethyn experienced a great loss when her husband whom she loved dearly fell in love with another woman. “I was devastated when he left, but he really was a lovely fella – and the other lady is nice too,” she explained during an interview.

Fortunately love has a way of finding you, in 1975 Blethyn found love with Michael Mayhew, former British art director. The couple remained engaged for 35 years, but finally wed in June 2010. Concerning her second marriage, Blethyn expalins: “We were getting on a bit, and it seemed the sensible thing to do. No matter what age we are, a parent’s approval is something we always crave, and disappointing them is something we all loath. Blethyn, despite being in her late twenties, had to find the courage not only tell her parents that she left a stable job but was also getting a divorce.

Blethyn expected her parents to flit out, especially after learning that she will be pursing an acting career, but sometimes parents have a way of shocking us. Her parents confronted her and explained to her that they were ok so long as their child, Bethlyn, is happy. Just imagine the great amount of relieve she must have felt at that time.

During an interview, Blethyn revealed something her father used to tell his children, “You shouldn’t put off trying things, I think people put off trying things for fear of failure.”

Blethyn has received two Oscar nominations, up to the time of writing this article. I had to indicate this date because one of these days Blethyn will be able to garner this award like the other many other exceptional awards she has been able to bring home.

In 1996, she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress in a leading role for her performance in Mike Leigh’s 1996 drama Secrets & Lies. In the film, Blethyn portrays Marianne Jean-Baptiste, a lower-class box factory worker, who after years once again comes in contact with her illegitimate grown-up black daughter, whom she gave up for adoption 30 years earlier.

Blethyn’s second nomination came in 1998 when she received an Oscar nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the 1998 film Little Voice. In the film, she portrays Mari, a domineering yet needy fish factory worker who has nothing but contempt for her shy daughter and lusts after a local showbiz agent.

The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire rewards contribution to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service.

It is the second-highest ranking Order of the British Empire award, and thus to receive it you must really be awesome at what you are doing. Since Blethyn is one of those remarkable actresses, she was able to bag the award in the 2003 New Year Honours for her services to drama.

Blethyn has confessed that when she got the letter, she initially mistook it for a tax demand. After further inspection, she uncovered the letter’s content and was surprised. By the time she got the invite, both her parents were dead, so she attended the ceremony with an elderly aunt and her current husband.

You may wonder why so much fuss over a simple actress but to many Blethyn is not a simple actress but a reminder to all women no matter what your circumstances nothing is out of your reach.

In the course of pursuing her passion, Blethyn lost a stable career and a husband. Mind you, she did this in the 70s, a time when a woman’s greatest pride was being able to manage her household and maintain a perfect image of her marriage.

Blethyn’s story is among many other incredible stories of women who helped open up women’s mind to understand that it is not wrong to love yourself, to find your own happiness and to live life according to your own rules. In the process of doing so, you will receive more than you can image. In Blethyn’s case, she went on to become a renowned actress who is worth millions today and was able to find a loving husband who supports her in her career.

With that, ladies, have fun making your own rules.
