10 Things You Didn’t Know About Rugby Player Sam Stanley

He is the first openly homosexual player in English rugby union,  player who came to the limelight in 2016. Not much is known about this player, in terms of his personal life and playing career. He is only associated with his bravery in coming out openly to say that he is gay and his support. of LGBTQ+ rights. 

Sam  is a perfect example of bravery, self-belief and self-discovery that is lacking in many people around the world. 1. He Was From England

 He was born on November 8, 1991, and, originates from England. During the World Rugby Sevens Series in 2013/14 and 2014/15, he competed for England in rugby sevens. Sam had previously played club football for Bedford Blues (2011鈥�2014) and Saracens F.C. (2010鈥�2014). He joined the Ealing Trailfinders in 2015. He can play either fly-half or center.

It would interest you to know that he was just six years old when he started playing rugby. Thanks to his unquestionable rugby talent, Stanley was playing at a high level in no time. He earned his first appearance for the Saracens first team in a match up against the Exeter Chiefs in 2010. He also participated in under-16 and under-18 England teams.

3. He Comes From A Rugby Playing Family

The 31-year-old former Saracens back played in five Sevens World Series tournaments for England and belongs to one of the sport’s most famous families.er Saracens back represented England in five Sevens World Series competitions and is a member of one of the most illustrious families in the game. He is the nephew of Joe Stanley, the center who led New Zealand to victory in the 1987 World Cup; his brother Mike is a member of Samoa’s World Cup squad; and his cousins Winston and Benson play for Harlequins and Clermont Auvergne, respectively.

4. He Was The First English Rugby Player To Come Out Gay

In 2015, he made his sexual orientation public for the first time, making history as the first professional rugby player in the UK to come out as gay. He did so in an interview with the Sunday Times, saying that he wanted to “be a role model for anyone who is gay and wants to play sport.” He drew inspiration from previous players like Keegan Hirst who had come out openly to declare that they were gay. After the interview he lamented, “It is going to be an issue until more people and athletes come out, until it is not an issue at all. It might take years but hopefully lots of people will find the courage.”

5. He Was Criticized For His Sexuality

Sam is often hailed for his bravery to openly come out and declare that he is gay. This was a time when there were a lot of stereo types associated with the LGBTQ community. His choice to come out was regrettably not welcomed by everyone. He received some hostility from supporters and other players who called him “weak” and “unmanly.”  To navigate this difficult period, he was fortunate to have overwhelming support from his teammates, friends, and supporters who applauded him for his bravery.

6. He Remains A Strong Advocate For LGBTQ+ Rights

It takes courage and support to come out and defend your position as gay. It is even harder when you have to be the voice of other people who are undergoing the same. Stanley has grown into a strong ally for LGBTQ+ rights in the sports community since coming out. He has advocated for greater diversity and inclusivity in rugby and other sports, and he has collaborated with groups like Stonewall and LGBT Sport Cymru to advance equality. Many celebrities have embraced this to communicate different things. Unknown to many, Stanley has also inked a tattoo in memory of his romantic companion Laurence Hicks. According to him, it serves as a reminder of his love for Hicks and the value of staying true to oneself. What an impressive way for someone to express love.

8. He Runs His Own Business

Sam Stanley gained notoriety after he came out as gay in public, becoming one of the most well-known professional athletes in the UK. He has been concentrating on his personal training business since he stopped playing rugby. He also divides his time between the UK and Sicily, where he and his spouse Laurence run hosted lodging. It is also interesting to also note that he often strips off, plays the guitar, as revealed from his Twitter updates.

10. He Is Married To His Long Time Fiancee

Sam Stanley is married to his long time fiancee Laurence Hicks. He has often been criticized for marrying someone who is older than him. He stated, 鈥淎fter being a part of each other鈥檚 lives for almost 7 years, Laurence has been my pretend godfather, uncle, cousin and many others in order to make sure no one found out about us and that we were a couple funny looking back after having come so far together.
