10 Scary Facts About The Moors Murders

Between July 1963 and October 1965, the scary Moors Murders were carried out by Ian Brady and Myra Hindley. These murders were carried out in and around Manchester, England. Five children, Pauline Reade, John Kilbride, Keith Bennett, Lesley Ann Downey, and Edward Evans were the victims of the Moors Murders.

These victims were aged between 10 and 17 years old. Four of the five children were sexually assaulted by their assailants before they were murdered. Two bodies of the victims were discovered in graves on Saddleworth Moor in 1987.

In 1987, the third grave was discovered which was twenty years after Brady and Hindley had been convicted. One body, the body of Bennett remains undiscovered even though it is thought to be buried in Moor.

Ian and Myra were charged with the murders of Kilbride, Downey, and Evans. They were sentenced to life in prison under a whole-life tariff. Brady also confessed to the other two murders leading to the reopening of investigations and the discovery of the other grave.

Below are the 10 Scary Facts About The Moors Murders:

1. Brady had Began Talking about Committing the Perfect Murder before the Actual Murders

In January 1961, Myra Hindley who was 18-year-old joined Millwards as a typist and met Brady. Despite his criminal record, Myra was obsessed with Brady with whom they moved in together as a couple in her grandmother’s home.

In July 1963, Brady began having talks about committing the perfect murder. Myra revealed that Brady spoke to her about a novel, Meyer Levin’s Compulsion.

This novel told a fictionalized story of the Leopold and Loeb case where two young men had made an attempt to commit a perfect murder of a 12-year-old boy. However, the two young men escaped the death penalty due to their age. This story pushed Brady into committing the murders.

After Brady came from work on 12th July 1963, he ordered Myra to drive a borrowed van as he followed on his motorcycle searching for their victim. He had wanted to make the perfect murder that evening.

As they drove down Gorton Lane, Brady spotted a young girl and signaled to Hindley. However, Myra refused to stop because she recognized the 8-year-old as a neighbor of her mother.

The 8-year-old was supposed to be their first victim but they spotted 16-year-old Pauline Reade, who was a schoolmate of Myra’s sister, Maureen. Myra revealed they opted for the teenager as her disappearance could be of less attention than that of an 8-year-old.

After Pauline Reade accepted a lift from Myra, she was requested to help search for an expensive glove in Saddleworth Moor which she accepted. Brady joined them and took Pauline to the moor after she was convinced he was joining the search.

After 30 minutes, Brady returned alone and took Myra to where the lifeless body of Pauline was lying. Her clothes were in disarray and had been nearly decapitated. Pauline had two cuts to the throat (which included a four-inch incision across the voice box).

Brady openly revealed that he had raped Reade. He retrieved a spade that he used to bury Pauline as Myra returned to the van.

4. The Second Victim was Lured by a Bottle of Sherry

They had also promised him a bottle of sherry if he accepted their offer. John boarded the vehicle which was driven to the moor after Brady told him that they were going to search for a lost glove.
