Top 10 Greatest Egyptian Football (Soccer) Players of All Time


 

The history of Egypt football, all started when Egypt won the African Nations cup.

Interestingly Egypt won this cup 7 times in an unprecedented achievement on the level of the continent and at the same time, we find that the Egyptian Al-Ahly team sits on the throne of the winners of the African Champion League with 10 titles.

However, this and other achievements did not come out of nowhere as they indicate that the land of Pharaohs is home to many great players. And here are the top 10 greatest Egyptian football players of all time.

1. Mohamed Salah

Mo Salah is considered one of the best players in the world however he is a star who plays as a forward for Liverpool and the Egypt National Team.

Interestingly he goes by the nickname Egyptian Messi and he is commonly known for his finishing, dribbling, speed, agility, and ball control.

With the Reds, Mo Salah could break the Premier League scoring record for a 38-game season and he also received the Premier League Golden Boot after netting 32 goals in 36 league games.

2. Mohamed Aboutrika

Mohamed Aboutrika is a retired Egyptian footballer who has been regarded as one of the best football players in the Egyptian Football world.

He played as an attacking midfielder and forward during his professional football life for different clubs such as Al Ahly, Tersana, Baniyas, and the Egyptian national team.

He won the African Cup of Nations in 2006 with the Egyptian national team and he also helped his club Al Ahly to win the bronze medal in the FIFA Club World Cup in 2006.

In addition, Aboutrika is often considered the best Egyptian player in history and is widely regarded as one of the greatest African footballers of all time.

 3. Mohamed Zidan

Mohamed Zidan started playing football professionally in 1999 with AB. In 2005 he joined Werder Berman where his performance in the Danish League resulted in several top European clubs gaining interest in signing him and that was the beginning of the striker’s popularity.

He won the Bundesliga title from 2010 to 2012 with Dortmund. However, he continued playing football till 2015 when he finally announced his retirement from El Entag El Harby.

4. Hossam Hassan

During his professional career, the Egyptian footballer played as a striker for many teams including Al Ahly, Al Ain, Zamalek, Tersana, and the Egypt national team.

Regarded as one of the best Egyptian football players of all time Hassan is the second most capped player in men’s international football.

He is Egypt’s all-time top scorer with 69 goals in 169 appearances and he has eleven titles in the Egyptian league.

Hassan was a key figure in three of Egypt’s AFCON triumphs and also traveled to the 1990 World Cup with the Pharaohs.

5. Essam El-Hadary

Essam is a retired Egyptian goalkeeper and he was nicknamed the “High Dam”.

He has spent the largest portion of his club career with Al Ahly and has won eight Egyptian Premier League titles, four Egypt Cups, four Egyptian Super Cups, four CAF Champions League titles, three CAF Super Cups, one Arab Club Champions Cup, and two Arab Super Cups while saving the net for them.

Essam is the third on the list of all-time appearances for Egypt entering the 2018 World Cup and has made 150 international appearances for his nation since his debut in 1996.

Not only Essam has won the Africa Cup of Nations four times and was named the tournament’s best goalkeeper on three occasions.

6. Ahmed Elmohamady

Ahmed Eissa Elmohamady Abdel Fattah currently plays as a right-back for Aston Villa and is the captain of the Egypt national team.

Moreover, he started his professional career in 2004 with Ghazi El-Mahalla, and in 2010 he moved to Sunderland initially on loan from the Egyptian side ENPPI.

He went on to make over 200 league appearances for both Sunderland and Hull City before joining Aston Villa during the summer 2017 transfer window.

Interestingly he was part of the Egyptian squads that won the 2008 and 2010 Africa Cup of Nations.

7. Ramadan Sobhi

Ramadan Sobhi Ahmed is an Egyptian professional footballer who plays as a winger for Al Ahly on loan from Huddersfield Town and the Egypt national team.

He began his career in 2014 by playing for Al Ahly and later he joined Stroke City, Huddersfield Town, and now again playing for the Red Devils.

Joining Al Ahly he established himself in the first team at the Cairo International Stadium and helped the team to win the Egyptian Premier League title in the 2013 to 2016 campaigns.

Ramadan has a three-time Egyptian Premier League title from 2013 to 2014, 2015 to 2016, and 2018 to 2019.

8. Sam Morsy

Samy Sayed Morsy is currently playing as a defensive midfielder for Wigan Athletic and the Egypt national team.

He started playing football with Wolver Hampton Wanderers youth club in 1999. Later on, he joined Port Vale in 2008 where he joined the team’s senior team in 2009.

Leaving Port Vale in 2013 he joined Chesterfield in July 2013 and played for the club in the 2014 final Football League Trophy helping them to win the League Two title from 2013 to 2014.

He was then sold to Wigan Athletic in January 2016 and helped the club to win the League One title from 2015 to 2016.

However, his last destination has been Barnsley so far where joined on loan in 2016 and there he became a key first-team player as they secured an Immediate return by winning the League One title again from 2017 to 2018.

9. Shikabala

Mahmoud Abdelrazek Hassan Fadlala better known by his nickname Shikabala plays as a forward and attacking midfielder.

He is considered one of the most popular players among the fans of Zamalek. He played most of his career with Red Castle though he was punctuated by some transfers to other teams Shikabala soon returned to the School of Art and Engineering.

He is a prominent player in the team during the last decade especially after he wore the captaincy and became a savior of Zamalek in many difficult matches.

10. Mohamed Elneny

Mohamed Naser Elsayed Elneny is currently playing as a midfielder for Turkish club Besiktas on loan from Arsenal and he also plays for Egypt’s national team.

He began football professionally in 2010 by signing a contract with Al Mokawloon then joined Basel on loan and eventually joined the club permanently in 2013.

In January 2016 he was transferred to Arsenal where he still has a contract. However, he won eight honors at Basel including the Swiss Super League in each of his four seasons.
