The Scottish National Gallery is the national art gallery of Scotland built in a neo-classical style by William Henry Playfair. It is located on the Mound, Central Edinburgh near Princes Street. It was first opened to the public in 1859 and is run by the National Galleries of Scotland.

It houses Scotland’s national collection of fine arts, stretching across Scottish and international art from the revival of culture and the style of art and architecture up to the 20th century. 8. IT’S FOUNDATION STONE WAS LAID BY PRINCE ALBERT

On 30th August 1850 Prince Albert laid the foundation stone to mark the construction of the Scottish National Gallery and gave a speech hailing William Henry Playfair- designed building as the Temple erected to the Fine Arts.

On 24th March 1859, an evening reception was held to herald the completion and opening to the public of the National Gallery of Scotland. In 1889, The Scottish National Portrait Gallery was opened to the public.

In 1959, The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Arts is founded and opened to the public in August at Inverleith House in Edinburgh.

9. ITS MANAGEMENT IS DELEGATED TO THE DIRECTOR-GENERAL
