Castle Howard is suited in North Yorkshire England within the avil parish of henderskelfe and is a stately home.

The residence is the private land of the Carlisle branch of the Howard family, for more than 300 years. It’s part of the treasure house of England group of heritage. The mesmerizing design of the house was worked on by john van brugh the 3rd earl of Carlisle.

The castle was the Center for several television series such as the adaption of Evelyn wough’s, Bread shed revisited.

1.The castle is famous for its Baroque architecture

The magnificence of the castle depends majorly on the complexity of its architecture. It has a detailed and expansive plan, richly decorated.

The earl Carlisle hired an architect, Vanbrugh to design the castle. Castle Howard was 1st planned in October of 1698, when the 3rd earl took a lease for life on the damaged Henderskelfe Castle and its turf from his grandmother, Anne Howard, Countess of Carlisle.

A model curved of wood was presented to the king in the summer of 1700 and the construction of the castle began in 1701.

The castle consists of a nine-bay block in the baroque style, it has curved wings from a forecourt on the north front and is surmounted by a cupola.

2.The castle has gorgeous grounds and gardens

The house is suited in an ideal area on a ridge and this was used to its advantage to create an English landscape park, which opens out from the formal garden merging with the park giving it a beautiful ecstatic view.

The garden consists of temples, statues, trees, and lawns. There is a flower border to the east of the house called a colonnade border. The beauty of the gardens gives a serene feeling to anyone present in the area. The south lake in the temple also has shrubs and a wild garden.

3.There was a devastating fire at the castle in 1940

The Howard castle faced a great misfortune when an expected blaze of fire ran wild consuming the castle in 1940.

The fire began as a chimney fire at the southeast corners of the south front and made its way through the westerly parts of the building. The dome of the house collapsed with nearly 20 rooms lost to the fire.

Nearly a third of the building was left open to the skies after the fire. The survival of the house is majorly owed to gorge Howard’s effort in the 20th century.

In the year 2000 castle Howard was  300 years old and an estimated 10 million people visited it since 1950.

4.There is an ancient woodland at Castle Howard

To the west of the house lays a woodland called Ray wood which had been laid as an ornamental wilderness.

Ray wood is a 30-acre woodland garden. In 1975 the late Howard decided that the area should be an amenity wood and the original walkways created by the third earl to be brought back to their former glory.

The castle is associated with its famous appearance in the film, Brideshead in both the 1981 television series and 2008 film adaption of Evelyn Waugh, the novel Brideshead Revisited. The release of these movies placed the castle on the international maps and many it a site for many tourists.

6.Castle Howard has great halls and passageways

The castle is known for its remarkable great walls which are gestured externally by the dome.

The first room of the castle is the great halls and is resisted by the colossal substructure of the dome which rises of a square-shaped plan like a giant.

There are two arched doorways, one on the ground floor, and the other is reached via the stairs and gallery.

The ceremonial routes are articulated by the openings of the rooms. Two sets of passages are slipped behind the main piers of the dome, leading to the four wings of the house which are surrounded by a series of transverse arches.

7.The castle has a temple of four winds

The temple lies at the eastern end of the temple terrace, demanding a stunning view across the hill. It was designed by Vanbrugh but wasn’t finished at the time of his death in 1726. It was originally named the temple of Diana.

The temple deteriorated in the fire of 1940. Gorge Howard restored the temple in 1955. It was used as a place for refreshments and reading with cellular beneath where the servants used.

8.The castle is a heaven of many artworks

The castle is home to works of art of international significance. The 3rd earl began to collect pictures, sculptures, and tapestries during the early years of the 18th century to finish his newly built house.

In 1825, the largest number of paintings on display in any room was 20. the number of paintings displayed over the years changed, in 1759 there were only 29 paintings in store.

9.Castle Howard has an outstanding atlas fountain

The fountain stands on the ground of the big castle. the fountain and the pond date to the 18th century, when it was exhibited at the great exhibition previous to installation.

A large globe dominates the fountain supported on the shoulders of the atlas. the fountain is fed from a half-million-gallon ray wood reserve. The pond is vast with a diameter been 27 meters.

10.The castle has magnificent statues

Throughout the gardens, 18 feat figures can be found. The highlights of the statues include Apollo sitting on his stone plinth, it even curved with a mountain scene at the end of the lime walk. There is also the statue of the shepherd boy, tucked away in tranquil.
