Scotland is a country that is part of the United Kingdom. It is on the northern part of the island of United Kingdom. The mainland Scotland sits on a 96-mile border with England to the southeast.

The country has numerous great actresses that have been in local and international films throughout history.

Some notable feature of Scottish actresses is that most of them are read heads a good example is Rose Leslie and Karen Gillan.

1. Karen Gillan

She is a Scottish actress and filmmaker. Karen came to the film limelight from her first role by playing Amy Pond in the BBC One series Doctor Who in 2010–2013.

She grew up in Inverness Scotland and is an only child to Her parents. Her father is a singer and a recording artist.

Her passion for acting started when she joined youth theatre groups and also when she studied at Charleston Academy, Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts and Edinburg’s Telford College.

During her first year in college, she got a part in the movie Rebus, thereafter she got to be in another film, Stacked and the Kevin Bishop Show in 2008.

She got her international recognition together with other films such as; the Marvel films Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in 2017, Avengers: Infinity War in 2018, and Avengers: Endgame in 2019, and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle in 2017 and Jumanji: The Next Level in 2019.

She has appeared on great playwrights shows such as John Osborne play inadmissible Evidence and broadways play, a time to act in 2013.

She not only acted but also wrote scripts, directed films and featured in them too.

2. Shirley Henderson

Shirley is the eldest of three sisters. She was born into a working-class family in the village of Kincardine in Fife, Scotland.

She sang and performed in school plays at her drama club as a teenager.

She had her breakthrough when she took part in a Television talent search show.

She won the competition at the Butlins Holiday Camp and went on to perform at music gigs in local music clubs.

Shirley later joined the London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

While there she did stage performances at England’s National Theatre company.

She played a leading role on the British drama, Hamish Macbeth, in 1995. In 1996, she co-starred with Robert Carlyle in the film future trainspotting.

She got nominated for the BAFTA TV Award for Best Supporting Actress for the Channel 4 miniseries Southcliffe 2013; Canadian Screen Award for Best Actress for her performance in the 2017 film Never Steady, Never Still.

Shirley won the 2018 Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her role as Elizabeth in the original production of Girl from the North Country.

3. Laura Fraser

Laura Fraser is a 43-year-old Scottish actress brought up in Glasgow. Her father, Alister is an aspiring scriptwriter and runs a small building company.

Her mother was a nurse who switched her career to teach in a college. is now a college lecturer. She grew up in a close-knit family.

Her father played an important role in her acting career. He wrote plays for her school which she always played the leading act.

After she graduated from high school, Laura went to Glasgow Langside college where she did a drama foundation course.

She later joined the prestigious Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.

While at the academy, she took up a supporting role in the film Small Faces in 1996.

She dropped out after the academy doubted her commitment to the course work.

With her family’s blessings, she moved to London and landed a leading role in a BBC film NeverWhere.

She played in other films such as Cousin Bette, Man in the Iron Mask, Âé¶¹APP Brixton, The Investigator, Divorcing Jack, and Virtual Sexuality.

Laura is a multi-talented actress that adapts to her roles accents notwithstanding.

She moved to the US and landed a role in an HBO drama Jawed Angels. Shortly after she got married and moved with her husband back to Glasgow.

She got her daughter in 2006 and shortly after went back to making films.

4. Rose Leslie

The name Rose Leslie is quite familiar with many especially fans of the epic television series Game of Thrones.

She is a Scottish actress who had her first leading on-screen aged 21 in the film New Town in 2009.

She grew up in Aberdeen Scotland near the Lickleyhead castle where her family has called home for more than half a century.

She is famously known for her role as Ygritte in the HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones in 2011.

She has appeared in other movies such Now Is Good in 2012 and The Last Witch Hunter in 2015.

While attending Millfield school Leslie developed a deep passion for acting and excelled in the drama department.

She joined the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 2008.

Her first television role was in a documentary series, Locked Up Abroad. She also appeared in the film Purves and Pekkala in 2009.

This film earned her the Scottish BAFTA Awards for best Acting performance in New Talent.

She was also in the British television series Downtown Abbey for seven episodes, appeared in a play called Bedlam at the Globe Theatre in London.

Other television films that she has been part of are; Case Histories and Vera in 2011, The Ghost Position in 2012.

Her role in Game of thrones made her develop a new passion for rock climbing.

5. Georgia King

Georgia May King was born 18 November 1986 and is a Scottish actress.

She grew up in a family of artists; her father was an actor and her mother an opera singer.

Growing up, Georgia dreamt of becoming a film director. She started off working a local cheese shop before getting her first break in acting at 18 years old.

She played as Rosamond Oliver in the film Jane Eyre. She almost missed out on this role as she had a ruptured appendix.

Before another actor was cast, she got cleared by her doctors to be part of the film.

Her famous films are the new normal, wild child, merlin, and Tanner Hall.

Her role in the film Tanner hall got her recognition for her excellent performance as a manipulative character.
