Blarney Castle is a medieval stronghold in Blarney, near Cork, Ireland. Though earlier fortifications were built on the same spot, the current keep was built by the MacCarthy of Muskerry dynasty and dates from 1446.

1. The Castle is the Third Building on the Site

Blarney Castle originally dates before 1200. This was when a timber house was believed to have been built on the site. However, no evidence remains of this.

Around 1210, the timber house was replaced by a stone fortification. It was destroyed in 1446 but subsequently rebuilt by Cormac L谩idir MacCarthy, Lord of Muscry.

2. It was Besieged during the Irish Confederate Wars

Blarney Castle was besieged during the Irish Confederate wars. Moreover, in 1646, the castle was seized by parliamentarian forces under Lord Broghill. It was later restored to Donough MacCarty.

Additionally, during the Williamite War in Ireland in the 1690s, Donough MacCarty was captured, and his lands including Blarney Castle were confiscated by the Williamites.

3. A Murder Room is Located Above the Main Entrance

Cormac Laidir Maccarthy was involved in a lawsuit in the 15th century. He appealed to Cliodhna for help. She told Maccarthy to koss the first stone he found. The morning on his way to court.

MacCarthy did so and the results were that he pleaded his case with great eloquence and won. Thus Blarney Stone is said to impart 鈥渢he ability to deceive without offending鈥�. MacCarthy then incorporated it into the parapet of the castle.

The second legend is that the stone was presented to Cormac McCarthy by Robert the Bruce inn1314 in recognition of his support in the Battle of Bannockburn. This legend holds that this was a piece of the Stone of Scone and was installed at MacCarthy鈥檚 castle of Blarney.

However, scientists in Scotland examined a piece of the stone. They found that it was a piece of limestone from close to the castle.

5. Kissing the Stone is not as Easy as it Sounds

The Blarney Castle stone was built into the east wall of the battlement 85 feet off the ground. However, The kiss was not casually achieved.

To kiss the stone, the participant must ascend to the castle鈥檚 peak. Lean over backwards on the parapet鈥檚 edge.

However, it is traditionally achieved with help of an assistant. Although the parapet is now fitted with wrought-iron guide rails and protective crossbars, the ritual can still trigger attacks of acrophobia.

In this mysterious and hidden landscape are a druidic sacrificial altar, a hermit鈥檚 cell, a witch鈥檚 kitchen, and other features beneath ancient yew trees. The Yew trees have roots clinging to the bare rock like the veins on a witch鈥檚 arm.

The yew over the witch鈥檚 kitchen is over 600 years. Then there are the stones of the witch鈥檚 staircase which will grant your wish if you perform the necessary ritual correctly.

7. Blarney Castle Stone Prevented the Surrender of the Castle to Queen Elizabeth I

Dermot MacCarthy was to surrender the Castle to Queen Elizabeth I as proof of loyalty. He said he would be delighted to do so, but something always happened at the last moment to prevent his surrender.

His excuses were frequent that the official who had been demanding the castle in the name of the Queen became a joke at the Court. When the eloquent excuses of McCarthy were repeated to the Queen, she said 鈥淥dds bodikins, more Blarney talk!鈥�

The Witch鈥檚 kitchen is located in the Rock Close of the Blarney Castle. It鈥檚 believed that the 鈥榃itch鈥檚 Kitchen鈥� was home to the first Irish cave dwellers.

It鈥檚 said that, when the dwellers arrived at the kitchen in the early morning, they would find the remains of a fire that was lit by a witch late the night before.

10. The Castle had Outer Defences

The Defences included a curtain wall, some of which still survive. A fortified tower to the east of the main castle, replete with gun loops, formed part of these defences and was probably built in the 16th century with 17th-century additions.
