Powerscourt Estate is a large country estate which is noted for its house and landscaped gardens. It is located in Enniskerry, County Wicklow in Ireland.

The estate occupies nineteen hectares of land. The history of the Powerscourt Estate is more interesting to listen to and learn a lot from.

The house was originally a 13th-century castle which was extensively altered during the 18th century by German architect Richard Cassels. The altering of this castle took a whole decade from 1731 to 1741.

There was a threat of destroying the Powerscourt in 1974. A fire which started in 1974 left the house lying in a shell until 1996 when it was renovated.

The castle was a three-storey building which had at least sixty-eight rooms and was owned by an Anglo-Norman nobleman known as La Poer which means power. This building had several purposes for its owners who changed in different centuries.

There was a feud over the ownership of the property which was peacefully resolved by the King and it was officially handed over to the Slazenger family. Powerscourt Estate is a popular tourist attraction site in Ireland.

1. A Three-Storey Medieval Castle with Unique Features was Located at the Estate

The Powerscourt Estate is majorly known for the house which is located here. Previously, it was a castle that was owned by an Anglo-Norman nobleman known as La Poer.

This house was a three-storey building which had at least sixty-eight rooms. The house was huge as it was 18 metres long and twelve metres wide.

There is an entrance hall where family heirlooms were displayed. Unlike other storey buildings, this house had its main reception on the first floor rather than on the ground floor.

2. Powerscourt Ordered for a Decade-Long Remodelling of the Castle to Modern Country House

La Poer owned the medieval building from the 13th century to the 16th century. In the 16th century, the Powerscourt family took ownership of the property.

The Powerscourt family rose in wealth and prominence for several centuries. In the 18th century, the first Viscount Powerscourt commissioned the remodelling of the house.

He hired architect Richard Cassels to alter and remodel the medieval castle into a more modern country house. This whole process took a whole decade from 1731 and got finished in 1741.

The architect used the commanding hilltop position to create a sombre style which gained more popularity. This house was called the castle air by Sir John Vanbrugh.

3. An Eight-Year Inherited Powerscourt Estate

The Viscount Powerscourt were the owners and lineage to inherit the property. In 1844, Mervyn Wingfield who was the 7th Viscount Powerscourt inherited the title and the Powerscourt Estate.

He was eight years old when he inherited this massive property. Mervyn Wingfield had to wait till he was 21 and embarked on an extensive renovation of the house and create a new garden.

4. The Estate’s Ground has several Main Attraction Sites

The 7th Viscount Powerscourt made several renovations to the Estate after taking over. One of the major renovations is the huge garden.

This garden is the main attraction scene in the estate. It consists of the Tower valley with a stone tower, Japanese gardens, winged horse statues, Triton Lake, a pet cemetery, Dolphin Pond, walled gardens, Bamberg Gate and the Italian garden.

The Pepperpot tower was designed after a favoured three-inch pepperpot of Lady Wingfield. Another noticeable scene on the grounds is the Pets’ cemetery.

The pet cemetery has tombstones that have been described as astonishingly personal. The estate garden design was inspired by the visits of Powerscourt to ornamental gardens at the Palace of Â鶹APP, Schonbrunn Palace near Vienna and Schwetzingen Castle near Heidelberg. It took twenty years to complete the development of the garden.

5. The House was Destroyed by Fire and Left as Ruins for 22 Years

Powerscourt family sold their property to the Slazenger family who lived there for a long time. During the 20th century, an unfortunate incident happened at the Powerscourt Estate.

On the 4th day of November 1974, there was a fire at the house on Powerscourt Estate. This fire destroyed a huge section of the house.

The house was left in ruins for twenty-two years before it was subsequently renovated. The renovations which took place in 1996 have stood by for these years.

Powerscourt Estate is a major attraction site for tourists from around Ireland and from the rest of the world. The majority come to enjoy the views of the gardens while others are interested in the house.

The house has got several rooms within, but only two rooms are open to the public as they once appeared while Powerscourt had residents. The rest of the ground floor and first floor are currently retail units.

7. Tara’s Palace Museum of Childhood was Relocated to Powerscourt Estate

There are several attractive things at the Powerscourt Estate. The house holds several important and attractive properties.

Among them is the Tara’s Palace Museum of Childhood. Tara’s Palace Museum of Childhood was relocated from Malahide Castle to Powerscourt House in 2011.

This museum features dollhouses, miniatures, dolls, historic toys and Tara’s Palace. Tara’s Palace is one of the greatest dollhouses in the world.

It is on par with the Fairy Castle at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago and Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House at Windsor Castle.

8. Powerscourt Waterfall is Found in the Estate

Another notable natural landscape at the estate is the Powerscourt Waterfall. The waterfall and its surrounding valley are owned by the Powerscourt Estate.

The two pieces of land are no longer directly connected. Powerscourt waterfall stands 121 metres high. This makes it the second highest waterfall in Ireland.

In 1858, the 7th Viscount Powerscourt established a deer park around the waterfall. This is how there was the successful introduction of the Japanese Sika to Ireland.

9. A Separate Entrance Fee is Required to Enter the Waterfall Area

Powerscourt Waterfall usually attracts several visitors. Not many recreational activities are held at this waterfall area.

To access the area, a separate entrance is required. Children are required to be paid €3.50 and adults €6.

10. A Golf Club is Located at the Estate

Powerscourt Estate has several other prominent sections where various recreational activities take place. There is a golf club within the estate which is known as Powerscourt Golf Club.

The Powerscourt Golf Club is home to two par 72, 18-hole courses. The Easy was created first and then the West. Powerscourt Golf Club ends have fast greens and hilly fairways.
