The Nuuk Art Museum is a national museum located in the Nuuk capital of Greenland. The museum has notable collections which include paintings, watercolours, drawings, graphics, and figures in soapstone, ivory, and wood.

Most of these collections were collected mostly by the businessman who was known as Svend Junge. The museum mostly contains collections of Emanuel A. Petersen which are over 150 paintings.

1. It was Founded by Svend and Helene Junge

The museum was founded mainly by the private collection of Svend together with Helene Junge. These private collections formed the basis of the Nuuk Art Museum and are the museum’s main and permanent exhibition.

The original collections of the museum, which are assembled over a lifetime are extensive and eclectic. This original collection demonstrates the different gazes and variety of artistic endeavours in Greenland over time.

2. The Museum was a Donation

The museum was founded on 22 May 2005. It occupies one of the old Seventh-day Adventist Church buildings in Nuuk, which was a Donation.

 The museum was donated to the people of the Municipality of Nuuk  Svend and Helene Junge. The construction of the art museum was completed and inaugurated on 21 June 2007 during Greenland National Day.

3. Started as a Graphic Workshop

Nuuk’s graphics workshop was opened in the year 1975. This led to the first ever generation of home-grown Greenlandic artists where Previously specialised in graphics and painting.

The workshop which is now the National Art School of Greenland trains five budding artists every year. Recently the museum has rolled out a program called the artist-in-residence program.

Its main purpose is to encourage artists and visitors and also to enhance better interaction and interest from the next generation. This by using various methods such as talks, events and school class visits.

4. The Art Museum Exhibit weather Diaries

Between August and November 2016, the art museum started exhibiting various Weather Diaries. It was a collaboration between Iceland together with the Faroe Islands and Greenland. The diary was presented by artists Nina Gorfer and Sarah Cooper.

Through their photo-portrait series, they examined the intersection between various things such as fashion, climate, heritage and identity in the West Nordic countries. This daily became the first and the largest internationally-acclaimed exhibition at the museum.

5. It Contains Oil Paint and Golden Frames

The Museum has large coloured portrayals. The portrait was made of oil paint and also golden frames by Emanuel A.

They are closely hung on the walls and are surrounded by figurines of soapstone and tupilak which are carved in the tooth. The museum showrooms are also filled with tools. Some of these tools are of higher artistic quality than others, but that does not matter.

8. Nuuk’s Town Branch

The museum has made tremendous changes and growth, this is due to the creation of a new branch of the museum which is in Nuuk town. The branch is called the Nuuk’s Town Museum and was opened in the summer of 2016.

The museum branch was opened in an old shipbuilding yard which is in the old colonial harbour. This branch of the museum exhibit artefacts, photos, and paintings which mainly tells the story of the town of Nuuk.

9. Nuuk museum has Additional Attractions Sites

Apart from the Exhibition of different artefacts, the museum has additional attraction sites. This site includes the Niels Lynge’s House, this house contains the estate of Niels Lynge, who was a famous Greenlandic vicar, poet and artist. Niels Lynge was the father of painter of light Hans Lynge.

The main attractive thing about this house is the interior of the house which has a 1960s Greenland style. The house contains some paintings which were painted directly on the wall.

For over 10 years, it was just as Svend Junge left it as a house. But for now, the museum has grown and expanded its concept and more. The main aim and vision of the museum are to make different changes concerning the original gift from Helene and Svend Junge.

In addition, the museum has added eight new exhibitions every year where it always cooperates with Greenlands cultural house for exhibitions.

The museum’s spirit to accommodate everyone from the children to the old people helps in the interaction between them which influences the young people’s behaviours. It is also regarded as a home to local artists.
