1. The Museum First Exhibition was in 1965
In the year 1965, the museum exhibited for the first time in Greenland’s Moravian Brethren Mission House. Moravian Brethren Mission House is also known as Herrnhut House.
A historical building located in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland. The historic house was established in 1747 from timber which was shipped to the United Brethren from the Netherlands.
The house was the centre of the Moravian Brethren Mission in Greenland and all the missionaries who operated across the west coast of Greenland. The Greenlanders converts were once reported saying, “If it can be so beautiful here on Earth, how wonderful must it not be in Heaven”.
2. It was Relocated in the 1970s
The museum was moved to its current location in Nuuk’s old colonial harbour in the late 1970s, this was due to the expansion of its collection with the repatriated native Inuit items from the National Museum of Denmark to the museum.
In the year 1991, the National Museum and National Archives were Merged to form the Greenland National Museum & Archives.
3. The Museum Main Display is Qilakitsoq Mummies
Qilakitsoq mummies are the major displays in the national museum. The remains of these three mummies, that is, women and two six-month-old children which date to the mid-15th-century are held at the museum.
The Qilakitsoq is an important and abandoned archaeological settlement site in Greenland. It was recognized as the discovery location of eight mummified corpses which were from the Thule period. The mummies have provided important insights for about 500 years into the lives of the Inuit.
