Alexander Payne’s latest movie, The Holdovers, redefines the concept of charm as this film radiates charm and warms your heart without becoming saccharine. Set in a 1970s New England prep school winter break the movie takes you on a fascinating journey of its main and supporting characters’ lives of self-indulgence and self-awakening and ultimately self-awareness.

Paul Giamatti shines, and in my opinion, his performance is certainly worthy of an Oscar nomination. His creation of the curmudgeonly boys’ school instructor is absolute perfection of sarcasm, wit, and irony.

Newcomer Dominic Sessa creates the perfect entitled self-indulgent brainiac student that every teacher has the right to hate. He reminds me of a young Adam Driver. Let’s not overlook Da’Vine Joy Randolf as the erstwhile cook Mary Lamb. She is an absolute treasure to watch. And of course, we have Carrie Preston delivering another one of her perfect supporting characters.
