Director George C. Wolfe brings “Rustin” to life with grace and ease as he tackles what for all should be a harsh reminder of the cruelty and prejudice rampant during the advent of the civil rights movement. This could not have been accomplished without the brilliant casting of Colman Domingo as the title character, Bayard Rustin. His performance is most certainly worthy of all the nominations received.
All the more stunning in this film are the supporting stories of bias and prejudice within Rustin’s own circle of peers. Albeit some are brief, one cannot overlook Jeffrey Wright’s portrayal of Adam Clayton Powell or Gus Halper as his longing-for-love assistant. A wonderful bright spot was Chris Rock, foregoing his usual comedic approach to life to bring us the character of Roy Wilkins. We are also blessed with cameos by Audra McDonald and the wonderful DaVine Joy Randolh and CCH Pounder.
You really must make time to view this one – you will be glad you did! Two thumbs up, 5-stars all the way!
