Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would leave a movie theatre thinking I had just taken an LSD trip or been a player in a Salvador Dali nightmare. Poor Things was certainly that and a lot more. NO, this is NOT a negative as I certainly give this film a more than solid 5 stars and loved how director Yorgos Lanthimos deftly navigated this truly bizarre, intriguing and compelling story.
Emma Stone is brilliant and is certainly Oscar nomination worthy (and IMHO so much more so than for her win for La La Land which I felt was a phoned in performance) as is the ever fabulous Willem Dafoe who, so far this year, would be my choice to capture the Oscar. This science fiction fantasy black comedy (say that 5 times quickly) also stars Mark Ruffalo in a role that truly highlights his oft overlooked talent. Among the standouts of the vast cadre of actors supporting these brilliant performances that are fabulously nuanced and delivered at an impressive level of richness are two standouts, Ramy Youssef and Christoher Abbott. To quote Bette Davis, “fasten your seatbelts, it’s going to be a bumpy night.”
