Last year, a friend of mine flew to Germany to enjoy the Octoberfest celebrations. Thomas had been looking forward to a fun week of exploration, beer tasting, and adventure with some friends. When his flight landed, he dragged himself, exhausted, to pick up his luggage, only to learn it had been “misplaced.”
“We’ll send it to your room as soon as we find it,” they said. He shrugged and went to the hotel in the comfort of his travel clothes – sweatpants and a sweatshirt. His luggage didn’t arrive the next day … or the next. He had no phone charger, no change of clothes, no toiletries, none of his medications, and the only shoes he had were the comfy slip-ons he wore on the plane.
He lost two days of his vacation chasing after his luggage and shopping to replace his lost essentials. His friends went on their adventures without him and all he got was stories and pictures (and a lot of ribbing).
His luggage finally showed up … just in time for his return trip.
Lesson #1: Keep critical items in your carry-on, along with at least one change of clothes.
Twelve Essential Travel Tips
What other essential travel lessons should we keep in mind?
I’m a seasoned traveler, adept at planning and packing efficiently, but compiling a list of essential tips is difficult. So, I asked ChatGPT, the artificial intelligence program everyone is so excited about.
“What are the most important travel and destination tips you would suggest to international travelers?”
Like usual, it came up with some pretty good ideas, but somewhat incomplete. Therefore, I added a little narrative of my own.
Plan Ahead
ChatGPT: Research and plan your itinerary well in advance. Make a list of must-see attractions, activities, and restaurants, but also leave some flexibility for spontaneous discoveries.
Author: When I travel with my family, each of us “adopts a day.” That person plans the entire day, from breakfast to dinner and all the adventures in between. Once our daughter picked “Lay on the beach and drink Pina Coladas all day” so that’s what we did. When you share the task of planning, everyone has a voice and gets what they want.
Travel Insurance
Chat GPT: Don’t underestimate the importance of travel insurance. It can provide coverage for unexpected events like flight cancellations, medical emergencies, and lost baggage.
Author: I usually shun travel insurance because it tends to be too restrictive. But when my wife arranged a flight to Zihuatanejo, she bought it for both of us. I shrugged and said “What a waste.” Then, I caught Covid and was prohibited from flying without a positive test and I got stuck for two weeks. [Note: being “stuck” in Zihuatanejo for two weeks is pretty cool.] Regardless, the insurance policy reimbursed me for hotels and food. My wife is brilliant. Note: Please read the policies carefully to understand the scope. Mine required receipts, a lot of paperwork, and it took months to get my money.
Safety First
ChatGPT: Prioritize safety, especially when traveling with kids. Know emergency numbers, keep an eye on your belongings, and be cautious in unfamiliar areas.
Author: Good advice above. In addition, the US State Department lists travel advisories , and an interactive world map . It is highly recommended that you check your destination and all the stops you’ll be making on your way there and back. My family also selects a location to meet if any one of us is lost or misplaced, or our phone or wallet is stolen. We carry enough cash (separate from our wallet) for food and transportation in case of emergency.
Pack wisely
ChatGPT: Pack essentials but try to travel light. Don’t forget important documents like passports, IDs, and any necessary travel visas.
Author: Here’s the part where you remember my friend who was stranded in Germany his sweatpants. Keep your essentials (and a change of clothes) in your carry-on. Also yes, pack as light as you can. I fit everything I need in a large backpack and a single carry-on. That way I can be flexible and mobile. Finally, leave a little extra room in your luggage for gifts and trinkets.
Local Customs and Etiquette
ChatGPT: Research the local customs, etiquette, and cultural norms of your destination. Being respectful and understanding local practices can enhance your travel experience.
Author: I like to learn at least a few words of the local language. I always read extensively about the culture, dress codes, traditions, and holidays. I’ve been pleasantly surprised several times to learn that my travel plans fell on a major holiday that I wasn’t aware of. Local celebrations are the best way to learn about culture. Read about recent news and current events in your destination country and the surrounding area. It may affect your trip and you’ll want to look educated and informed when talking with the locals.
Transportation Options:
ChatGPT: Research transportation options at your destination, including public transit, taxis, and rideshares. Familiarize yourself with local traffic rules if you plan to drive.
Author: I almost always pre-arrange trips from airports to cities, reserve boat taxis, local flights, etc – just so I don’t get stuck. That happened once in Belize where we missed the last water taxi – and we had a backup plan in place and it added to the quality of our trip rather than (like the other people in the taxi where the guy didn’t have i/n mapping.
The final six tips:
- Time Zones: Understand the time difference between your home and your destination. Adjusting to a new time zone can impact your sleep patterns, so plan accordingly.
- Electrical Outlets: Check the type of electrical outlets used in your destination and pack the appropriate adapters or converters for your devices.
- Stay Connected: Ensure you have a way to stay connected, whether through local SIM cards, portable Wi-Fi devices, or roaming plans.
- Stay Hydrated and Rested: Travel can be exhausting, especially with kids. Make sure to stay hydrated, get enough rest, and build in downtime during your itinerary.
- Support Local Economy: Whenever possible, support local businesses, artisans, and markets. This helps contribute positively to the local economy.
- Environmentally Conscious Travel: Be mindful of your impact on the environment. Dispose of trash responsibly, avoid single-use plastics, and choose eco-friendly activities.
By taking all these tips into consideration, you’ll be better prepared to have a smooth and enjoyable vacation with your family, creating beautiful memories that will last a lifetime.
Enjoy your travel, and don’t be like my friend Thomas – be SURE to pack essentials in your carry-on.
