Colombia, officially the Republic of Colombia, is a country in South America with an insular region in North America. 

Colombia is classified as an upper middle-income economy and is one of Latin America’s largest economies. The country’s economy is based on its rich natural resources.

Colombia is famous for the mines of Muzo, Chivor, and Coscuez located in the Andes Mountains. This region produces the world’s finest Emeralds. About 70-90% of the Emeralds in the world come from Colombia!

Just like these rare stones, it is home to rare raw talent. It has produced literary legends from Gabriel Garcia Marquez to artistic icons like Fernando Botero. And the domain of music is no exception with several superstars coming from this small island nation.

On this list, we are going to look at the top 10 most famous singers in the country.

1. Shakira

Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll is a singer, songwriter, producer, actress, and model. She was born in the city of Barranquilla on February 2, 1977.

Shakira is perhaps the most famous Colombian vocalist in the world.  She is of Lebanese and Colombian descent. She has become an icon of the latter culture, being the best-selling female artist in Latin music in history.

She started her career at age 13 by recording her first album, Magia. She then developed her talents as an amateur poet, singer, and belly dancer.

She is best known for songs including 鈥淗ips Don鈥檛 Lie,鈥� and 鈥淲henever, Wherever鈥�, which sold 5 million copies. In 2010 Shakira performed 鈥淲aka Waka鈥� which became the official song of the 2010 World Cup.

With 80 million albums sold worldwide, she is one of the most popular Colombian artists! Sony Music and Billboard even recognize her as the Queen of Latin pop.

Jos茅 脕lvaro Osorio Balvin, born in 1985 in Medell铆n, better known as J Balvin, is a Colombian singer and record producer, Hip hop urban music pop Latin trap Latino reguet贸n.

After several years of experimentation with various musical styles in the clubs and streets of Medell铆n, where he adopted his stage name, he found success with the Latin Grammy-nominated song 鈥�6 AM.鈥� 鈥淎y Vamos鈥� and 鈥淢i Gente鈥� tracks did even better.

He has managed to position himself in both the Hispanic and English-speaking music market, placing his songs at the top of several music charts. He has made collaborations with the likes of Daddy Yankee, Juan Gabriel, French Montana, Arc谩ngel, Farruko, Maroon 5, and many other acclaimed artists.

He has currently numerous awards including the MTV Video Music Award and Latin Grammy Awards.

3. Carlos Vives

Carlos Vives is a popular singer and composer in Colombia. He was born in 1961 in Santa Marta on Colombia’s Caribbean coast.

He began his career as a film and telenovela actor. His initial trials at singing were not successful. Things changed in 1991 when he took a role as vallenato composer Rafael Escalona. In this role, he released two telenovela soundtrack albums, which earned him national success.

He is also known for singing with Shakira, La Bicicleta in 2016.

In both their acting and singing career he has bagged numerous awards. He owns more than 10 Latin Grammys, Billboards, and 鈥淟o Nuestro鈥� awards,

4. Maluma

Juan Luis Londo帽o Arias also known artistically as Maluma, is a Colombian pop, reggaeton, and Latin trap singer. He was born in 1985 in Medell铆n.

He was scouted at age 15 and was signed by Sony Music Colombia and quickly produced several hit tracks, including the breakthrough album Pretty Boy, Dirty Boy.

He became famous in his native country in 2011, thanks to the singles 鈥淔arandulera鈥�, 鈥淥bsesi贸n鈥� and 鈥淟a temperature鈥�, and with 鈥淐arnaval鈥� in the rest of Latin America.

The 37-year-old has bagged numerous awards with 272 nominations and 66 wins.

5. Manuel Turizo

Manuel Turizo was born on 12 April 2000 and raised in Monter铆a, a town on the eastern end of Colombia鈥檚 Caribbean coast.

He has made quite the name for himself as a musician with influences from pop, trap, vallenato, and R&B. He achieved acclaim throughout Latin America for his 鈥淯na Lady Como T煤,鈥� which was released when he was just sixteen years old and which has accrued over 200 million listens on Spotify.

His 2021 album Dopamine smashed that record, however, in less than a year, Turizo鈥檚 鈥淨uiereme Mientras Se Pueda鈥� received 265 million listens.

6. Carlos Vives

Carlos Alberto Vives Restrepo is a Colombian singer, songwriter, and actor. He was born in the city of Santa Marta on August 7, 1961.

Throughout his career, he has shown impeccable talent.  He has been honored countless times and is the owner of more than 10 Latin grammy, Billboard, and 鈥淟o Nuestro鈥� awards.

He has opened to the world with his particular music, his songs of rock and pop or its more traditional mixes between Cumbia and Vallenato uniquely propelled him also exalting his great talent.

7. Toto La Momposina

Sonia Bazanta Vides is better known as Tot贸 la Momposina. She is a Colombian of Afro-Colombian and Indigenous descent. She was born on 1 August 1940 in the northern Colombian town of Talaigua Nuevo near Mompox in the Bol铆var Department.

She is a singer, dancer, and teacher of folk music. She grew up surrounded by musicians and thus became interested in traditional music and Caribbean dances from an early age.

She is best known for her 1993 album La Candela Viva on Peter Gabriel’s Real World Records label and singles 鈥淎guacero de Mayo鈥�, 鈥淭amborero鈥� and 鈥淢a帽anitas de Diciembre鈥� among others.

She was nominated for the Latin Grammy in 2002 in the category of the best tropical album. She won recognition as the best folk artist.  Her music is always accompanied by African sounds, bamboo strokes, and the fine sound of the leather of a drum.

8. Juanes

Juanes is a Colombian author, composer, and performer. He was born in 1972 in Medellin.

He formed the band Ekhymosis in the late 80s but fared better in his solo career: his first two albums, F铆jate Bien and Un D铆a Normal earned him national acclaim and nine Latin Grammy Awards.

He has currently won several Latin Grammys and in his musical life has managed to sell more than 16 million albums around the world.

In addition, this talented artist can easily play instruments such as guitar, flute, piano, and electric guitar.

She first earned fame when she appeared on the Colombian version of the musical competition program X-Factor. She released a single 10 years later 鈥淎hora Me Llama鈥� which quickly became a hit.

She has made collaborations with renowned artists like Daddy Yankee, Nicki Minaj, and Quavo.
