Asghar Farhadi was born on 7th May 1972 in Homayoun Shahr, located in the Isfahan province of Iran. He is an Oscar-winning Iranian film director and screenwriter. Asghar has won two Oscars in the “Best Foreign Language Film” category for his films separation’ and ‘the salesman’ making him one of a few directors worldwide who have won the category twice.

His films focus on the human condition and also portray intimate and challenging stories of internal family conflicts. This has made him receive critical acclaim for his international films. He has won so many awards in the course of scriptwriting and directing.

In the year 2012, he was privileged to be included on the annual time 100 list of the most influential people in the world. Asghar married 鶹APPa in the year 1990 and they have two children. While he was beginning his career, he made several short films for the Isfahan branch of the Iranian Young Cinema society. As a screenwriter, he made his debut in the year 2002 with the film ‘Low Heights’. Followed by ‘Dancing in the Dust’ in 2003.

He has become famous on the international level after the film ‘A Separation’ was released. The film won the Academy Award for best foreign language film and it made him the first Iranian film to win the award.

In 1987, when he was just 15 years, he joined the Isfahan branch office of the Iranian Youth cinema society and while there he made several short films. When he was joining the school, had been established four years earlier.

Farhadi is also a graduate of the University of Tehran and earned a BA in dramatic arts and Tarbiat Moderes University and earned an MA in stage direction. With this education, he has grown his career by acquiring more knowledge of how everything should be handled.

In the start, while he was still a young boy  15 of age, at Isfahan Youth cinema society he made numerous short films. Later he directed TV series such as a tale of a city and co-wrote the screenplay for Ebrahim Hatamikia’s low heights.

In 2003, Farhadi made his feature film debut with Dancing in the Dust. In 2004, he released the beautiful city. His third film was  ‘Fireworks Wednesday’ film was awarded the Gold Hugo at the 2006 Chicago International Film Festival. From there, his films were a win and won awards on international levels.

His screenwriting career began with the film ‘Low Heights’ in the year 2002. The film was directed by Ebrahim Hakamikia. In the year 2004, he released the film ‘The Beautiful City’ which he wrote and directed. The storyline of the film is about a boy Akbar who at the age of sixteen commits a murder and later gets condemned to death at the age of eighteen.

Due to that film, he gets awarded the Golden Peacock Award at the International Film Festival of India and also won the Warsaw International Film Festival and the Fipresci prize at the split film festival.

In 2006, he Co-wrote an Iranian drama that portrayed the life of a troubled couple as they prepared for a vacation to Dubai. The film is known as ‘Fireworks Wednesday’. He is also the screenwriter of the film ‘Canaan’, ‘About Elly’, ‘Tambourine’ and the ‘Trial on the street’.

Asghar’s popularity has reached the international level and greater heights after his 2011 film ‘A separation’ which he wrote, directed, produced, and released. The film won the Academy Award in the best foreign film category. It was the first film for the Iranians to win an Oscar. The film also won many other awards like the Golden Globe Award, the Cesar Award, and the Independent Spirit award.

His second film that led to his popularity internationally was ‘The Past’ which was released in 2013. Like the first one, he wrote and directed. It was nominated for the Golden Globe Award in the best foreign Language Film category. Almost all his films are always a success.

In the year 1990, Asghar met the love of his life and married 鶹APPa Bakhtavar they have two children Saaghar Farhadi and Sarina Farhadi.

His wife 鶹APPa is also an Iranian film and television director and she was born on August 16, 1972. He currently lives in Tehran with his wife and younger daughter.

When he won the Academy award he expressed a sincere commitment to his country by referring to the award as a win for the Iranian nation and not his. He did not attend the 89th Academy Awards Ceremony in protest of U.S. Executive order 13769. His films rarely addressed political themes directly.

8. Farhadi’s Numerous Awards and Honors 

He is one of the best and most well-known directors and also in the selected list of directors who have won the best foreign film, Oscar, more than once one of his films here was ‘separation’. His other awards include the Vittorio De Sica and Federico Fellini which he was awarded four times each. 

The film salesman won the Academy Award for best foreign language film in 2017. A Hero won the Hafez Award for best director- motion picture and best screenplay. He received an honour in Legion of Honor French in the year 2012 and foreign policy top 100 global thinkers in the same year.

Asghar films have been of great success internationally. He has received honors too for being one of the best scriptwriters, and directors.

Two of his films “A separation” which was released in 2011 and “The Salesman” in 2016 were both recipients of the Oscar award for the best foreign language film.

 10. Other Participation Beside Scriptwriting and Directing

In the year 2012, Farhadi participated in the sight and sound film polls that were held that year. Film polls are held after every 10 years to choose the greatest films of all time. The chosen directors are asked to select ten films of their choice and Farhadi had his own choices.
