1. The Pier-2 Art Centre is Located in Kaohsiung City

The Pier-2 Art Centre is situated in the city of Kaohsiung, the largest city and port in Southern Taiwan. it was included on Lonely Planet’s list of best cities to visit in the world in 2018.

The city is home to awesome arts districts, a lovely waterfront, and well-developed urban transportation networks. It has also been called the “street art capital of Taiwan” as the city government permits and encourages street art in particular zones.

2. The Pier-2 Art Centre was Created from Abandoned Warehouses

Pier-2 Art Center was built in 1973 as common port warehouses of Kaohsiung port Harbor. It was later abandoned after the city moved from an industrial hub to a service sector-based economy.

A group of local artists established the Pier-2 Artistic Development Association and made the center the headquarters for artistic development in southern Taiwan.

In 2006, the Bureau of Cultural Affairs of the Kaohsiung City Government took over the management of the center. Since then, it has become an international art platform where tourists and locals come together to enjoy fine art.

Hamasen Museum of Taiwan Railway is a railway museum in Pier-2 Art Center.  It explores the history of all aspects of rail-related transportation, including locomotives, railway cars, trams, and railway signaling equipment.

The museum building was originally constructed as a railway station in 2003. The building was declared a historical building after the station closed down and the last train departed from the station in 2008.

The city government took over the ownership of the building and handed it over to the Railway Culture Society to transform the building into a museum which was opened on 3 July 2016.

The Pier-2 Art Centre is the home of TWR Entertainment, Inc, a Taiwan-based media organization that blends world-class creativity and innovative technologies.

The Company mainly engages in the planning, and production of computer graphics, animations, visual effects, and three-dimensional stereoscopic films.

It is also engaged in filming, post-production of television shows, as well as development and investment of films and television shows.

7. The Pier-2 Art Centre was Burned Down  in 2021

On 9th March 2021, a major fire erupted at the bicycle warehouse in the pier 2 center. It took 36 fire trucks and 78 firefighters two hours to extinguish the fire.

The cause was not determined, and no casualties were reported. Around 1,200 square meters were damaged by the flames, and nearly the entire building was compromised.

There were no exhibitions at the warehouse at the time of the fire, and only the structure of the building was affected by the fire.

After a hectic day in the Pier-2 Art Centre, Liuhe night market is the place to chill out the evening by doing some shopping and enjoying street local delicacy. Night markets are a great place to pick up cheap local foods, including stinky tofu, barbecued squid, red bean, and pancakes.

There are also a number of historical sites and monuments that were left after the colonization of the Dutch in the 17th century, the Qing dynasty during the 18th and 19th centuries, and the Japanese empire from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century.

Pier-2 Art Center is located at No. 1 Dayong Road in the Yancheng District of Kaohsiung City in Taiwan. To get there by public transportation, take the Kaohsiung MRT to Yanchengpu Station and leave through Exit 2.
