Top 10 Interesting Facts about Mark Chao

Mark is a famous Taiwanese actor and model who was born in Taipei on September 25, 1984. However, he made his debut in the entertainment industry in 2009 and moved up to the top since then.

Chao is the son of actor and television host Allen Chao. He graduated from the University of Victoria in Canada, with a double degree in sociology and economics. He started his career in the Taiwanese entertainment industry after he graduated.

He met a Chinese actress Gao Yuanyuan on the set of Caught in the Web and married her in 2014.  They had a baby together, a daughter Rhea Chao in June 2019, just a month after announcing the wife was pregnant.

He rejoices in speaking Mandarin and actually helps him remember his good youthful days with his friends and family. In addition, he caught at these memories and with great humor interrupts conversations just as in an Asian reality show featuring him.

In situations when someone compares him with a person who does not speak English, his demeanor actually softens and his voice sounds more pleasant than ever before.

As a graduate of sociology and economics from the University of Victoria, British Columbia, he has other titles away from the entertainment industries like being a marketing and advertising professional.

More importantly, he has starred in various romance films, among the top being Till the End of the World which was shot in Antarctica in 2018. Currently, he is set to appear in The Four Heavenly Kings as Detective Dee.

1. His First Award

Mark Chao made his debut in the television drama Black & White in 2009. His role as the rash, righteous and no-nonsense cop shot him to fame and won him the Best Actor award at the 44th Golden Bell Awards.

He then starred in his first film, Monga (2010). The gangster flick, directed by Doze Niu grossed more than NT$250 million (HK$61 million) in Taiwan, making it one of the most successful domestic productions.  Acting is his career which he loves and more so when he is under the mentorship of Doze Niu. 

His rise to fame began here, more productions were yet to be generated with a large number of returns both in Taiwan, the United States, and Canada.

3. The Best Newcomer Award

Chao won the Best Newcomer award at the Asian Film Awards for his performance as a solitary, self-loathing, and intense gang member.

Chao won the Best Actor in Leading Role at the 26th Asian Television Awards in 2021 which brought about his success in film instruction across China. Under the directorship of  Doze Niu, he became a star in various films.

Among those films, he starred in was the First Time, Angelababy, a prequel of black and white, caught on the Web under the directorship of Chen Kaige. the box office in this was over six million viewers. Surprisingly, the critics of the film also gave it a plus.

He continued to receive awards in various categories both in Hong Kong and Taiwan, for instance at the Huabiao Awards.

In 2018, Chao starred in the romance film Till the End of the World, which was shot in Antarctica. He is also set to reprise his role in Detective Dee: The Four Heavenly Kings. The same year, Chao was cast in Lou Ye’s period drama film Saturday Fiction.

Chao was then cast to play Hu Bayi in Chronicles of the Ghostly Tribe  in2015), adapted from the best-selling tomb raid novel series Ghost Blows Out the Light.

The film, directed by Lu Chuan, was a hit at the box office but received mixed reviews in regard to its faithfulness to the novel. The following year, he starred in the Chinese-French film The Warriors Gate, directed by Matthias Hoene and filmed in English.

5. A Grand Return

He took a break in acting for 8 years and made a return in a fantasy romance drama known as Eternal love in 2017. Though Chao’s casting as the beautiful male lead was originally met with criticism, he eventually won praise for his acting.

6. A Volatile Rise in Popularity

After the series on Eternal Love was aired, he experienced a stormy rise in popularity and increased film offers from many film directors. During the Forbes China Celebrity 100 list in 2017, he ranked 36th which was quite a boost to his career.

Mark Chao is a Taiwanese-Canadian actor and model. He has excelled as an actor and model in the industry. In addition, he made his television debut in the television series Black & White, for which he won the Golden Bell Award for Best Actor.

9. Return to the Small Screen

There was a rumor that the Chinese remake of the said drama was soon to begin production and that Chao is set to return to the small screen with the Chinese remake of the South Korean television series Misaeng, titled Ordinary Glory.

He is also set to reprise his role as Detective Dee in Te Four Heavenly Kings. At the same time, the same year, he is cast in Lou Ye’s period drama film Saturday Fiction.
