Prior to World War II, Lan Kwai Fong was devoted to street vendors.

Originally, the square accommodated many mui yan, or marriage brokers, a role that was solely held by women. Mui yan were traditional marriage middlemen between two families. As a result, it was known as Mui Yan Hong or Hung Leung Hong.

Gordon Huthart’s opening of the disco club “Disco Disco” in the basement of 40 D’Aguilar Street on December 23, 1978, accelerated the development of the Lan Kwai Fong area, making it famous around the world.

The disco club was popular among celebrities and expats before closing in 1986.

Lan Kwai Fong is open every day of the week from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., but Fridays are the best day to tour as there are numerous street acts and several special offers because this is the busiest day of the week.

In addition, each evening is divided into two distinct phases: Happy Hour and Spree Hour.

Happy hour runs from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and includes amazing deals on all alcoholic beverages such as one for one free, while Spree hour is primarily for university students and foreigners.
