1.A brief history about the Hong Kong Space Museum

The Urban Council first proposed the concept of a planetarium in 1961. After ten years, the Urban Services Department (USD) formed a working group to research international experience in constructing observatories. The study’s goal was to lay the groundwork for the future Hong Kong Space Museum.

The Hong Kong Government decided to construct the museum in Tsim Sha Tsui and appointed Mr. Joseph Liu as Planetarium Advisor. The USD signed a contract with the Carl Zeiss Company in 1974 to purchase a planetarium and other equipment for HK$3,050,000.

The museum opened on October 8, 1980, after construction began in 1977. The museum housed the first automated planetarium in the world.

The museum received approximately 590,000 visitors during the fiscal year 2008-2009. The exhibition hall in the Sky Hall was closed on 5 October 2015 for renovation work and reopened on 25 April 2018.

The Astronomical Carnival is part of the Hong Kong Space Museum’s astronomical observation program.

If you’re visiting the museum with your family, particularly children, the Hong Kong Space Museum’s Astronomical Movies are ideal for this trip.

Every Saturday between 3 and 5 p.m., the lecture hall hosts a film screening. The most famous shows are the “Moon Miracle,” which features the Blood Moon, Super Moon, and Total Eclipse of the Moon… and “The Secret of the Moon’s Birth,” which explains the beginning of the moon and how the earth evolved to become a planet.

These shows are in Mandarin, but they are accompanied by English subtitles.
