Shams Tabrizi was born in 1185 in Tabriz, Iran and died in 1248 in Khoy, Iran. He was a Persian Shafiite poet. He was known as the spiritual instructor of Mawlana Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Balkhi also known as Rumi. Shams taught Rumi in seclusion in Konya for 40 days.

He was spiritual incline even as a child and had a passionate Sufi mystic as his master. When he become of age he travelled places seeking a spiritual companion. He used to hide his mission and pretended to be a travelling salesman, making a living by weaving baskets.

1. His Shrine as a Unique Architecture

The Sham shrine was built with unique architecture. It is located in Shams Tabrizi Blvd, Kyoy, west Azerbaijan province, Iran beside a towering monument in a memorial park.

The architects in charge of the shrine while it was being built include Farshad Kazerooni, Azin Soltani, and Farnaz Bakhshi. There was a design team as well such as Anahita Ali Asgarian, Mandana Fouladi, Yasaman Sepahsalari, Azadeh Farajpour, Zoha Nekouian, and Hanieh Kazerooni.

The building is not only a Monument but also a cultural and historical centre. The place has unique architecture, it has animal horns in its structure that was built about 400 years ago. The landscape of the Shams memorial was designed in a way to communicate with all ages. Designing aims to teach visitors of all ages about the history of the city, the spiritual personality of Shams and his influence on people’s awareness of life while experiencing a different part of the site.

2. He Initiated Mawlana Jala ad-Din Mohammad Balkhi into Islamic

The poet was the spiritual instructor of Mawlana Jala ad-Din Mohammad Balkhi also known as Rumi. Shams meet Rumi towards the end of his life and found the companionship that he had been seeking all his life.

It is said that Shams taught Rumi in private away from others for forty days in Konya, before fleeing to Damascus. He as well inspired Rumi to write his most beautiful lines and transformed his outlook on Sufism showing him the path to the divine majesty.

3. He Taught People 40 Rules of Love

Tabrizi was a Persian Sufi and roaming dervish who lived at the end of the 1200s or early 1300s century. He taught the 40 Rules of love. Some of these rules include;

  • How we see God is a direct reflection of how we see ourselves.
  • The path to the truth is a labour of the heart not of the head.
  • You can study God through everything and everyone in the universe because God is not confined to a mosque synagogue or church.
  • Most of the problems of the world stem from linguistic mistakes and simple misunderstandings.
  • Whatever happens in your life, no matter how troubling things might seem, do not enter the neighbourhood of despair.
  • Patience does not mean passively enduring.

4. This Tomb was Nominated to be a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Tabrizi died in 1248 AD and his tomb is in the city of Khoy in the West Azerbaijan Province of Iran beside a towering monument in a memorial park. The tomb of Shams has been nominated to be a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations aimed at promoting World peace and security through international cooperation in education, arts, sciences and culture.

5. September 29 has Been Designated as Shams Tabrizi Day

Shams Tabrizi is remembered for his good doings. He was known as the spiritual instructor and mentor of the Persian poet Jalal ad-Dim Muhammad Rumi.

September 29 was named Shams Day in the Calendar of Iranian commemorating the celebrated thinker, Shams Tabrizi. The day is kept aside to celebrate and honour the good memories of Shams. Tabrizi day is celebrated every year in Iran.

6. He Wove Baskets and Trouser Girdles

During Shams’s youth days he was a construction worker and that helped him cater for his needs. However, during his travelling days to Erzincan in search of spiritual learning, he tried to get some construction work but no one would hire him, since he was so frail.

Tabrizi is said he then wove baskets and trouser girdles to earn a living. Wove basket is the process of weaving or sewing pliable material into three-dimensional artefacts while trouser girdles are a band of material around the waist that strengthens a trouser. This is an amazing fact about Shams since it shows how hardworking he was he never gave up despite the lack of a job he searched for alternatives.

7. He Developed a Method to Teach the Entire Quran in Only Three Months

Tabrizi travelled from one place to another in search of spiritual learning. He travelled all over the middle East-Baghdad, Aleppo, Damascus, Kayseri, Sivas, Erzurum and Erzincan. He gave lessons to children on how to read the Quan everywhere he travelled.

He as well developed a method to teach the entire Quran in only three months. He had innovative, unique views on Quran interpretation. Shams used four ways to interpret the Quran and made it easy to understand. He interpreted a word as is used for another word or concept, interpreted a verse by adding a word, interpreted a verse by providing a certain reason for its first revelation and lastly, justified some terms and expressions.

8. He was “Beautiful”

This is one of the fascinating facts about him.  It is said that Shams Tabriz was a very ‘beautiful boy’. 

Due to his ‘ beautiful nature, he was protected from women to save  him from people with bad intentions and who could influence him to do bad behaviours.

9. Shams Tabrizi was not his Real Name.

Shams Tabrizi was born in Tabriz 582 after Hijrat. His real name is Muhammad bin Ali bin Malikdad. However, he is referred to as ‘Shams’, ‘Shams ul Haq wa’d-din’, ‘Shamsaddin’, and ‘Shams-i Tabrizi’ in Mawlawi sources.  

According to Aflaqi, Shams was named by Prominent Sheikhs of Sufi as ‘Kamil-i Tabrizi’ or ‘Shamsaddin-i Perende’ because he travelled a lot.

10.  He was a Spiritual Teacher

Shams was granted Spiritual experiences and he stayed away from true School training. Sahih Ahmad Debe tells that Shams became his student at age of 22 and served him for 14 years before he started to travel from one place to another to teach Islam.

He was leading a mysterious life and had great spiritual capacities, which he was mostly in retreat and was performing sema.
